If some fat bloke asked to play your ax, would you turn it over and show him that plate? I didn't think so!

If he wants to play it badly enough that he'd be willing to subject himself to that kind of public self humiliation then who am I to stand in his way? I freely admit I would shield my eyes from all but the guitar itself.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I have three decent guitars in my loungeroom, a Tokai LP, Squier Strat and Epi SG. Anyone and everyone is welcome to use them, and the little modding amp. But only my closest friends are allowed entrance to the "inner sanctum", where my REAL amps and guitars live.

Of those friends, only about two can play, and they are a lot better than I. One has played my acoustic (Maton), he has the same guitar at home, and as expected, he treats it well. He is not interested in my electrics. The other has his own brilliant collection, and yet has not asked to play on my babies. He probably knows that I'll want a go on his! Personally, I think I'd get a kick out of people playing my guitars well.

If they can't play well, they won't get past the 'beater' guitars in the lounge. But I think most people would be content playing these anyway, as they are all good instruments, well looked after. My Squier is heavily modded, well loved and played often. I'll not let it go, but I'm happy for it to recieve a beating - in the line of duty of course!

So yeah, I'd let people play my guitars, but they would want to pull of some mean riffs and treat them well before I would let them know about the "real players in the other room"!

I was aiming for a fortress of fortitude, but Marlon Brando wouldn't give me a crystal...

Soundproofing isn't really an option, it is already a small room. But I work strange hours at the moment, so I don't get any complaints when I turn it up in the middle of the day!

For the most part, if I know someone, and I know that they do play, I'll let them do it, but usually only if I'm in the room with them.

I can't see anyone who owns a vintage or valuable guitar letting someone they are just acquainted with play their guitar. You may be making a very expensive mistake.I once made the mistake of letting a fella I didn't know too well play my 66 Gretsch Tennessean after he had begged me to let him try it out.It turned out that the jerk couldn't even play and he proceeded to beat on the strings like a madman and having a real laugh, thinking that he was being hilarious and not even realizing the value of the guitar.I had a very hard time restraining myself from hanging one on his beak.Ever since then I vowed not to let ANYONE play any of my guitars unless I could trust them with my life,so needless to say that's fewer people than I can count on one hand.

I am with the majority who voted yes in some form or other. One of the reasons I like having my Modern Player Jaguar is it is a guitar I enjoy playing, but taking it to open mikes allows for much lower levels of anxiety for many levels. However, I like it a lot and don't consider it a throwaway. There are nuances to these situations also.

Although I said yes, there could be scenarios that would have me decide differently.

 I love it when they pick up one of my basses and finially figure out that it's left-handed. The confused look on their faces is priceless!

Not meaning to steal the thread but, some people just don't get it.
For many (many) years I owned a beautiful Royal Enfield SII.

My friend and I come out of a pub after lunch and a beer and there are three guys looking over my bike. Well, my friends bike too. Anyhow this one guy says "nice bike", as I'm putting on my helmet. Then he asks, "Can I sit on it?"

I just stopped and looked at him. Then his friends told him, so I didn't have to.

Some people, unfortunately, just don't get it. Thank goodness, most do!!

Okay, back to guitars!

Gridlok :D

Hey Gridlok,I can imagine what he would have said if you were with your Missus....lol. There is no limit to the abundance of gall and total lack of common sense of some people. It seems to be the more people have of one,the less they have of the other.

Seems like some of us need to access our "friends" more than worry about our guitars. I don't know anyone that wouldn't value my guitars more than if they were their own.

Friends are a different story, I know them and trust them. This is why I call themmy friends. Acquaintances are a whole different story, I only know of them. In my book it is not the same thing.
