Hey BMW: I'm not aware that guitslinger has Irish roots (though he may do, alongside his other ancestory that I do know about). So was it you you were talking about - have you got Emerald somewhere in your background?

For my part my genes have English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish in approximately equal proportions - including ancestors from both sides of the Irish, um, debate. So I can act out any "troubles" you may wish, all on my own!

guitslinger is frum da rock. (Newfoundland) It's just an assumption on my part that he is of Irish descent since about 92% of that province is Irish and about 7.9% is some kind of Irish cross-blend. I live in Alberta and have no manner of British blood in me at all but since I work primarily in the Fort McMurray area, which is known affectionately as "Even Newer Foundland," I have absorbed a fair amount of knowledge of Newfoundlanders. I even speak their language when put to it, although not as fast as they.

I should also point out that I love Newfoundlanders. Love them. I've met thousands of them over the years and I've only ever met one who was a jerk. All the rest were salt of the earth, generous, happy people who love to laugh and lend a hand and hardly ever say a bad word about anyone unless it's really, really obviously true. They guy I met who was a jerk had been living out west for about 15 years or so and our ways must have rubbed off on him over time.

Ceri and BMW-KTM, you guys would be welcome to play any of my babies any time as I know that you both would treat them as carefully as you would your own and maybe even moreso. Most people and entry level guitarists don't appreciate just how delicate a primo instrument can be and also can't realize the value of one.

Newfoundlanders are well known for their offbeat and sometimes outrageous sense of humor. All you have to do to verify this is to watch This Hour Has 22 Minutes or The Mercer Report, both of which are written and acted almost entirely by Newfoundlanders. Some Newfoundlanders are among Canada's top comedians, such as Shaun Majumber,Mark Critch,Mary Walsh,Cathy Jones,Rick Mercer,Andy Jones,Greg Malone and several others who don't come to mind at the moment.

HI again guys even though I live in the part of the province known as the Irish Loop (because it's a circular route around the lower Avalon Peninsula coastline about 120 miles from start to finish)I have no Irish acestry. All of my forebears are from Cornwall,Devon or Dorset in the south of England.BMW-KTM your figures are somewhat off,the population of the Irish Loop is about 98% Irish extraction but only about 10 % of the island is of Irish descent and about 2% are French. We also have quite a large number of Innu (Indians) and Inuit(aka Eskimos but they refer to themselves as Inuit which translated to English means people). The majority of Newfoundlanders are of British ancestry, almost 90% .Lately, mostly due to our booming mining and oil industries, world class Marine Science Centre, university and med school we are getting to be a melting pot of many cultures. Strangely enough before the 1970s there weren't a lot of people from other cultures here but since these industries and learning institutions have come to be,we are becoming very rich in varied cultures. One of the best spinoffs of this is that restaurants are popping up now serving all kinds of strange and wonderful foods that I've heard of but never tried before.I especially love Schezuan,Thai and Indian food and quite frankly enjoy them more than North American cooking.

It depends on which guitar, how well I know that aquaintence and whether I've ever seen them handle a guitar before (in particular how careful they are with someone else's instruments).

My Strat or my Les Paul are not likely to be easily test driven by others unless they are very close friends who've proven they can handle my guitars withing dinging them on me.

My Sg and my Gretsch are less expensive models so I'd be more likely to let someone play them after seeing they can treat other people's things with respect even if I didn't really know them.

Generally I'll let most people play any of them, can always simmer down any out of order behavior. I've been lucky enough to have had friends extend long term loans of decent instruments (Les Paul goldtop, ex) so don't have problem with the idea. Hell, I can only play one at a time.

My Strats? Not a problem. There's not much someone could do the them that I haven't done ten times over. They're working instruments, they get beaten, and seem almost better for it.

This ^^

Naturally if the person took the guitar and started being stupid with it, I'd take it right back. But to have a policy set in advance that no one, ever, can touch it... that's a bit crazy. Even the world's top guitarists have tons of people touching their guitars at different times... techs, roadies, etc. And usually when they're not even around to watch. So for someone to set themselves a personal policy that's even harsher than the world's top artists... that's just kind of funny, now I think on it :)

If some fat bloke asked to play your ax, would you turn it over and show him that plate? I didn't think so!

It should read "Do not touch my guitar unless you look like this"

I have two guitars I take into school where they are subjected to abuse by 12- to 16-year olds, on the principle that everyone deserves to feel a decent instrument at some point. One is a '78 Strat which spent much of its life as a left-handed guitarist's spare right-handed jam guitar for whenever his friends dropped around.. it came over from the UK about 30 years ago, and I think most of its battle scars can be attributed to that journey! About the only thing that annoys me is when I tell a student to be careful as (despite appearances to impressionable teens) I'm not made of guitars, and they start flicking the switch as rapidly and as hard as possible.. some kids just do the opposite of what you tell them to, but like to withhold that information until they've got your property in their grimy paws.

As it's nicely worn in, I told myself that I could live with any minor dings incurred.. but one student (a promising player, it must be said) managed to give it its first real through-to-the-wood chip while my attention was elsewhere.. I was quite annoyed, it turned out, but thought it best to suppress my feelings and remain true to its jam guitar heritage.

To be on the safe side, I've got a Cabronita-style parts guitar that has been given a thorough relic treatment—so there is a point to relics, after all—and doesn't have a switch 'cause there's only one pickup. There really is almost nothing that could happen to this guitar in the schoolroom. The kids love it and pull some great sounds out of it, even on the horrible school amps. I keep a fuzz pedal in its gig bag so they can learn how to ride the volume knob, as I would have really liked someone to show me that stuff when I was starting out. It's been great to see that swampy, gritty guitar is still alive and well as far as the youth of today are concerned!

Still dunno if I'd let a friend play, though.. heh. Not my flamenco guitar, that's not been touched by another hand in over 20 years...
