.....Alot of people think anything with the label 'blues' or anything written in 12 bar blues is the blues. I wont give my opinion on that as most of you would probably condemn it like theres no tommorow. So I'm just gonna wait until someone else says something close to my opinion and definition of the blues, then I will agree. But, I will say there is a fine line between real blues, and nonesense 'blues'. In my opinion, of course

this is a fair example of American blues with British flavor for good measure. Blues is an enigma in music. From a percussive perspective you could start to play a shuffle and by the next rif you could be playing a bossa nova. Blues is blues. 8)

Some people play the blues as a genre, others use it as an extension of their soul. Some play it, others live it, and almost everyone can relate to it.

In other words, I think there are two ways of looking at it.
1. It's a genre. No different then rock, metal, punk, dance, or whatever.
2. It's a way to convey that true emotion of desperation and despair. It's the ability to convey so much emotion in a single song, word, or riff, that you can feel the pain simply by listening to it.

That may not make sense to others (made sense in my mind though), but maybe that's part of the mystery as to what the blues really is.

Very interesting topic! I am curious as to what your definition is Riley...

Amen to that, brother! I'm heading to my bunker now. Good thing I've got a new generator and unlimited firewood. Gotta kill me a deer now, so adios.

The blues is an emotion expressed through song.

My definition is "music from the heart & soul".

The blues were conceived in aching hearts.

To me playing the blues is sending what you're feeling in your soul, to your fingers.

Can't really anything more than what's already been said. Great observations.

My definition is : Dull music , where someone try to express feelings that they usually don't have! ( Though I get more often back to it myself ,than I should..... ) I regard it as lack of creativity and fantasy . Out of fashion , but also a cornerstone for newer music 8)

To me they have killed the blues with over exposure and it's now became a cliche. Used for beer commercials and the like.

Real blues to me doesn't exist anymore and it certainly has nothing to do with EC, who bears as much resemblance to a bluesman as i do ie. not at all.

There's a difference between playing the blues and really being the blues. Just so tired of all these fraudsters trying to claim they've such angst with the blues and then driving off in their Ferrari's.

The blues was Charlie Patton, Robert Johnson, Son House, Bukka White, Mance Lipscomb, Skip James, then Howlin Wolf, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Freddie King, BB King, then it was the British involvement but they were never bluesmen they were rock players who used blues stuff.
