any advice on building you own cabinet?

i work at a major home improvement store, and have access to many kinds of wood. i am thinking about building a cab since i am pretty handy with tools.

any advice on building-size, wood tolex, open vs. closed back, etc, would be appreciated.

It might be useful to know what kind of cabinet you were planning on building.

1x12?
4x10?

either a 1x12 or 2x12

i want to build it approx. 30x24 in size. that way i can use the cab one way for my 30" wide tube head, and the other way as an extension for my bandit 112. will be wired either way for 8 ohm.

on the other hand, i could just find an inexpensive cabinet someplace and repace with speakers i like.

all in the planning stage - no rush....

Lots of sites on the web that may help with either youtube vids or web hints such as:

Hey Phreddy, I don't know which tube head you have but I do know what a Peavey Bandit 112 is.

30" x 24" is a pretty big box for a single 12. In fact I'd say it's even a little on the large side for two 12s depending on how deep you build it. If this were my project and I was building it for those two amps with those dimensions I'm pretty sure I would build an 11" or 12" deep combination cabinet, something like what Mesa Boogie has begun to offer in which you have a 2x12 cab with separate chambers within the box where one of the speakers is closed and one is open backed. The Bandit is a really open backed box, almost like no back at all given the size of the box and the size of the speaker. I think you're going to want at least part of your extension cabinet to be closed back to compliment the Bandit with a little bit of woof. Since the other amp is a head I think part of it should be open backed. Ideally you could build it such that the open back half was really a closed back but with a removable back panel across the middle. You could even build both sides that way for maximum versatility. However I think you'd have to include some kind of adjustable port on each front baffle which you could open for closed back operations and close for open back. You sometimes see fully sealed enclosures in hifi stereo systems but I don't know that I've ever heard of one for a guitar amp.
