The Klon Centaur is considered by many to be the most hyped and perhaps reverred overdrive pedal of all time. Since having ceased production of its original runs in 2009, the pedal with an original ~$350 price tag has since TRIPLED in what people are willing to pay for it, skyrocketting to being valued at well over $1000.

I'd be interested in hearing what people's thoughts were on it. There are a lot of terrific overdrives out today.. has the Klon since become obsolete, becoming the basis of a fan club for people with deeper pockets, or is it really 'all that and a bag of potato chips'?

Had a play with one for a while hours a couple of years ago. Didn't actually know what it was at the time, it was just laying around in the studio while I was hanging around waiting for an extremely late singer to turn up for the session, so it was a completely fair review.

Verdict - Not bad. Not anywhere near as great as people make it out to be though - I sort of assumed it was some mid priced overdrive at the time until the engineer filled me in later. I was a bit shocked as to how much it cost.

The only thing it is any good at is if your amp is already pushed right to that sweet spot - then it adds an extra little hint of girth to the tone. It's really just good at adding a sprinkle of topping on an otherwise already great tone, and that it does very well indeed, although there are far better pedals for that (in my opinion) for a fraction of the cost.

It certainly has a place, but not one I'd pay that much for - I found the OCD (particularly if you run it at 18v) did the same job just as well but with more versatility on top. So that's what I bought.

If you really like the idea of a Centaur, you can build your own for about the cost of a Behringer pedal, there's certainly nothing particularly special or full of superamazingmojotone on the inside, aside from the slightly odd charge pump layout.
