yoda, neck adjustment is rarely needed, after reading that you've adjusted the truss rod on a Tele, are you adjusting the truss rod while the guitar is in tune as well as massaging the neck after the 1/4 turn?

I have adjusted the truss rod, while in tune, capo on first fret. No massaging though. Is that part of the Fender Set up guide?

The set up guide used to say " after 1/4 turn massage the neck for 10 or 15 minutes". I admit that I too have adjusted the truss rod with normal string tension but noticed that didn't work as well as making the adjustment without string tension. Sometimes the massage is all you need. Have you changed to a heavier gauge string set on this guitar?

Yes, I've moved from 9s to 10s, but should it make that much of a difference?

Yes it could make a difference. I noticed that on my guitars. The truss rod adjustment is an "after you've tried everythig else" type of solution, was just not wanting you to have any truss rod issues in the future as I have watched luthiers torque truss rods only to render them useless and recommend replacing the neck. Let us know if you get it set up to your liking.

:D take as long as it takes Yoda. I just took 2 days to install pups on a Strat but I think it's more because I do enjoy tinkering with electric guitars.

So I am back on this guitar again. I don't play it often and I keep it on a wall hanger. It appears that either the truss rod or the action have gone back to the way it was before I did the set up. How can this be? I ended up giving the truss rod a total of 4 quarter turns over a couple of days, then set the action. Now the damn thing has high action again. Anyone know why this could be?

Change in humidity and/or temperature in the room

My guess is that you have significant humidity and temperature changes in your room. Also action is adjusted at the saddles. I you have too much neck relief, you'll notice that the action increases the closer you get tithe bridge. Check your string height at the saddles first.

No offense, Yoda, but I think you need to take your baby to a qualified tech, if there's one in your area...

I usually fret it at about the 15th and the first, then look for just a glimpse of daylight at the 6th fret. This is where I start. Then, play it and make sure the intonation sets well. I don't know how to explain it but a guitar will have a sweet spot with the neck relief. A setting where it plays well and sounds in tune throughout the neck. Sometimes it's a little more or a little less or dead on factory specs. My acoustic for instance performs best set at factory specs, just shy of touching when fretting at the 1st and 15th. Also, most guitars will be flat from the 9th or 10th fret up.

Forgot to add. It can take me months to find the best setting. Playing it for a while and making small adjustments until I find what I believe to be the sweet spot. But if you start with or close to factory specs it will still work well throughout the process.
