So I've been slowly working on setting up my Squier Tele Custom II. I am not sure of a couple of things in the set up guide.

Which string is the sixth string? (truss rod) First, check your tuning. Affix a capo at the first fret and depress the sixth string at the last fret. With a feeler gauge, check the gap between the bottom of the string and the top of the 8th fret—see the spec chart below for the proper gap.

How many of you use the feeler gauge? Mine is lubricated with some kind of grease and I don't want to put it on my frets. It makes my hands stink like I've been working on a car all day...even after washing twice.

I have adjusted my truss rod 3 quarter turns (at 3 different times). It still seems like there is too much concave. Should I keep adjusting?

Thats all for now, but I'm sure something else will pop up.

The sixth string is the thickest string. (low E)
Wipe the lube off your feeler guage with a paper towel.
They put that junk on it at the factory to keep it from rusting since they don't know how long it will sit before it gets sold.
Yes I used to use a feeler guage until I was able to judge by eye what I wanted.
Ensure the guitar is tuned to pitch (A440) before doing anything with the truss rod.
After even the slightest adjustment go back and re-tune the guitar before you check the results of the adjustment you just made.

Thanks BMW. I have only tuned up and used the capo before adjusting the truss rod. i have left it overnight ( or longer) before re-adjusting. It seemed after the 2nd adjustment, the neck looked pretty straight, only to check a few days later and it seemed concave again. Can the truss rod "slip"? Tried to set the action last night after another truss rod adjustment, and it still seems like too much curve. Is it better to use the feeler gauge, or can I eyeball it? This is the first "real" set up I have done.

The truss rod usually doesn't slip unless there's something wrong with it. If there's something wrong with it then you're in trouble. That won't be a 5 minute job you can do yourself. What usually happens is that the neck wood takes some time to adjust to the different pressures being applied to it by the rod and strings.

(Edited due to brain fart ... duh ....)

Hmmm this guy registered in '08 which puts him at around 4 years of playing experience at the very least. Has a cool gig story on another thread. Doesn't know which is the sixth string.

Hi 1neeto: hahaha! Though I gotta tell you, there's a bunch of folks here who've been playing a heck of a lot longer than that and still can't agree between us whether the bridge on a Strat selector switch is position one or five. Damned if I know...!

Cheers - C

If we talk Gibson then the bridge is the lead pup, lead means first...or take charge... or a metal Superman can't see through.

But when we read tablature, the guitar is laid out on its side and we read left to right, which makes the neck pup the first pup.

Thanks... Mind is even more blown now.

I believe on Jimmy Page's Les Paul the pickup selector switch is labelled "rhythm - led". 8)

Its a legit question. I know keys and notes on the guitar, not numbers. If I was holding the guitar and counted the strings, the low E would be 1 and the high E would be 6. That is why I asked.

Maybe it's because the numerical order of the strings is one of the first things I learned right before the notes of the open strings, and how to hold a pick correctly. I figured it must be something very fundamental.

Agree. Legit!

I don't read tabs (-not counting strings one way or the other) I don't use a pick. Still been playing for 40 years without too many complaints . I guess that should mean that those skills are not fundamental or necessary to play :D

yoda, neck adjustment is rarely needed, after reading that you've adjusted the truss rod on a Tele, are you adjusting the truss rod while the guitar is in tune as well as massaging the neck after the 1/4 turn?

I have adjusted the truss rod, while in tune, capo on first fret. No massaging though. Is that part of the Fender Set up guide?

Yes, in fact if you want your neck to settle down and stop misbehaving you really should give it a gift certificate for a day at the spa. You want to leave that part to the professionals. If word ever got out that you were hand massaging your long hard wood thing I don't know if you'd ever live that down.
