From what I have seen, the Z Coil pickups are a strange type of 6 string guitar pickup that is sort of shaped like Fender's P Bass pickup.

E, A, and D, strings are on one pickup on top.
G, B, and E, strings are on the other pickup on bottom.

G&L guitars are very good guitars, but just never caught on with the marketing public. They are technically true "Fender" guitars if you want to think of them that way. G&L stands for George Fullerton & Leo Fender.

The G&L guitars, are very good. I had a couple of the American made G&L SB-2 Basses. Top quality across the board.

The Comanche guitars (like the one you're considering) are great--the funky Z-coils are somewhere between a single coil and a humbucker, they look and sound cool. The design is classic 80's G&L...

Buyer beware, though; in the mid-90's, after Leo died, and George Fullerton and Dale Hyatt left/retired/whatever, the overall quality became spotty... There were still some good instruments here and there, but some real dogs came out of the factory. Check out and play the instrument very thoroughly before you lay any cash out.

I love the original S-500 model (the newer S-500's are hit or miss, some good, some bad) as well as the George Fullerton Tribute model; the unique Cavalier (three mini-humbuckers slanted at basically the same angle as a Tele bridge pickup) are pretty cool, and the various ASATs are very nice.

My first three electric guitars were G&Ls.

The first (which I still own) was a beautiful sunburst F-100 with the series II neck profile ("faster" profile). Mahogany body, maple neck w/rosewood fretboard, two coil- and phase-tapped humbuckers, hardtail bridge. This particular one is kinda unique, with it being the manufacturer's first production year (1980) and the combination of features (hardtails, sunbursts and rosewood fretboards are rare on F-100 models). I talked to one G&L "historian" and he said to definitely keep it, because it's a rare bird.

Next, I bought an SC-2. These were US-made "student" model guitars with less bling, but were well-made with good materials. The early SC-1 and SC-2 axes have developed a cult following, made up of (mostly) punk-pop players.
Mine was glossy black with a maple fretboard, an excellent (stock) G&L tremolo and pair of the big P-90-esque MFD pickups commonly found on the G&L ASAT. I never bonded with that guitar (mostly due to my own ignorance; it probably could have used a setup and some way to cut down on the "stickiness" of the maple fretboard...I was a new player and didn't know these things could be remedied). I sold it during one of the Mortgage Payment Massacres of the 1990's.

The third G&L I owned was a Nighthawk; these Strat-style axes were (and are) killer examples of what I think of as "Leo's Strat forward desigbs"...many classic features, but some cool little tweaks that make the design that much better. This one was lost to the Mortgage Payment Massacre, too. It's the only guitar I've ever owned that I regret selling.

But I was able to locate (and afford) another Nighthawk just this year (there were only 246 made), and it is everything I loved and remembered about my old one...

I have a couple of G & L's and they are great guitars with flawless workmanship. One is an American made Legacy Special with the Hot Rails pickups and a Swamp Ash body. The other is an ASAT Blues Boy with Ebony fret board and wood binding on the body, a really beautiful guitar. I have been very happy with both. :D

voodoochile98, G$L guitars are unique in a Leo Fender/George Fullerton kind of way. Reminiscent of classic Fender designs, built for maximum professional performance. A clear distinction can be heard, try one and you will hear the difference. Image Image
pretty much every guitar player can sound good playing a Fender electric guitar. Playing a Comanche, being good is kind of a requirement, I love the feel of a Comanche but I can't get them to sound great consistantly. In the acronyms of my favorite Martian, this is of course IMHO, YMMV.
