+1

If people spent as much time worrying about their own guitar playing as they do Johns, then we'd have a few more guitar gods.

I'm ashamed to say about 2 years ago I only played guitar like, 30 mins a day, if that. I became so preoccupied with other things that I just kinda, forgot my love for guitar playing.

Then I heard John Mayer. He inspired me. He (to me) brought guitar music back to the masses. And since I only just heard him with Continuum (he's not hugely famous in the UK) I liked it. A new guitarist!

He excited the once dying flame of guitar playing for me once again! He made me pick up the guitar again - I always say that. And it's for that reason that Mayer is one of my guitar heroes.

One man's trash is another man's treasure though I guess.

I had stopped playing all the time for a while and it was just something I would mess with when I had time. But I started listening to John Mayers stuff and it made me want to practice and learn his stuff. Learning more about JM opened my eyes to the other greats like SRV and Jimi who I never really payed much attention to before. I put a link to some great playing by John to bump this back up to the top and most people here just put him down even more. Like him Love him or Hate him he is there and it looks like he will be around for a long time.

I put it down for about 6 month one time. I wasn't very happy at the time. But never again, The rust spread from my fingers to my brain, it took a long time to get to where I was before that. Thankfully I got back to where I was and now I'll never let a more than a few days pass, and that's if I've been distracted by something else.

I may stop for a week once in a while when I hit that "WALL" we all hit from time to time. Just long enough to clear my head and come back fresh and hungry again. Then again, sometimes all I need to do is use a different tuning for a few days to be fresh again.

I always had a thing for Jimi, but yeah I'm the same with SRV. It's weird - I know I always say "here in the UK" but, here in the UK, hardly anyone seems to know about Stevie Ray or John Mayer. So that's great for me, it's like something new and fresh!

Everyone knows about Jimi Hendrix. Even people who only know his name wear T-shirts with him on - they don't even know what he did.

I think john Mayer is not worthy as he is not popular in the mainstream audience(Non guitarists)

Jimi Hendrix is the true guitar hero because all people could get into his music
also Jimi hendrix was iconic and from another planet.
He turned the strat into an electric guitar as an instrument in its own right and not just a loud acoustic guitar
john mayer has done nothing near that

Jimi will live forever

John mayer will just die an old man who used to play guitar

Well Im a guitarist and I know there are plenty of guitarists on here that do think he is "worthy". He may not be everyones favorite and he may not be an icon just yet but he is only 30 and he is out there performing with all the living legends and is respected by them all equally. I dont understand how people can say he is not worthy when he is colaborating with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, B.B. King and many other legends out there. He is young and has a long way to go but he has had a hell of a start and I cant see him being forgotten any time soon.

I think it's a fact that we'd all love to be in his position.

You know what I think? I think people should stop letting magazines dictate to them who is a guitar "god" and who is not. People seem to think it's such a big deal that Rolling Stone said this, as if Rolling Stone is the final authority on all that is music. Personally, yes, I'm "pro-John" so to speak, but I also think we all have our respective guitar gods; the people who inspired us to do what brought us all to these forums in the first place-- pick up a guitar and play the hell out of it. If Mayer is doing this to people at a time when few others in his position are, so be it. We can be happy that someone in the public eye is slinging a Fender on the magazine covers.

On the less serious side of things, it's a bit funny, some of the arguments people have started here and youtube and such. People argue "blah blah blah, Mayer's a hack, what about Frusciante, Derek Trucks, etc etc". It seems that people forget this article wasn't JUST about Mayer. Or maybe they didn't even read it. Or maybe they're just mad that Mayer is right side up in the picture and the others are up side down. I truly think a lot of people who get so worked up about this article have not read it in its entirety. The article spotlights many up and coming "guitar gods", and is titled The NEW Guitar Gods, hence such artists as Trucks, Frusciante, and Mayer on the cover as opposed to SRV and Clapton. People fail to realize that this isn't even a ranking article. No one declared Mayer the top guitar slinger of all time. It's a showcase of 20 different artists who Rolling Stone sees as keeping guitar in the limelight.

I think people need to be less caught up on comparisons and competitions and be more focused on what it's really all about: Music.

Amen to this,I say if john Mayer has inspired young and old guitarists to play then he must be doing something right

I do beleive that if John Mayer plays more blues than pop he can take the Honorable nickname "Slowhand Jr." But i do agree that Derek Trucks is a slide guitar hero

My two cents -- I didn't think much of JM until I saw the Crossroads vids. I have much more respect for him and his ability now. Also, anyone who puts Blues in front of a young audience is OK with me.
