I say an Rolling Stone mag about " The new guitar heros" and John Mayer was on it. On the issue afterwards many people issued complaints about him being on the list so I wanted to see how many people like him or do not.

I think the "Is John Mayer Worthy?" threads have been over discussed by just about every music related message board on the net.

Any time Rolling Stone does one of those things about half of the people they list don't belong.

I would say that you hit the nail on the head. When you don't have true Guitar Hero's out there, the bar gets lowered. John Mayer is a good player, but in my opinion he is not a hero......yet

The only problem with John Mayer is that he wasn't a contemporary of Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck, and all the guys who blew the minds of now- middle-aged guitar guys when they were kids.

For them, a great deal of their personal identity was wrapped up in knowing the Official Cool Guy take on everything that might come up around the guitar shop, and a big part of that cred came from knowing the order of the pantheon, and understanding that the aforementioned (and a few others) were untouchable True Gods Among Men who could never, ever be surpassed. To let go of this attitudes would mean letting go of everything you know about yourself.

So, when young players like Mayer come along, who not only play extremely well but also have a lot of pop music charm that allows them to get their records played on the radio ("nobody ever played SRV on the radio, man 'cause he was TOO GOOD AND TOO PURE!") and possess a wide-ranging musical knowledge that lets them sit in with everybody from EC to Herbie Hancock, well... that shakes the foundations of heaven.

So, the now-middle-aged guitar guys have to freak out and declare him a fake, a fraud, he's not the real thing, not a True God Among Men like OUR heroes were, so that everything stays nicely in place and we don't have to admit that we're middle-aged, our opinions about youth culture don't matter, we're being replaced by the younger lions. etc.

John Mayer is an excellent guitar player, a good self-promoter, a smart songwriter and a very lucky guy. QUestioning the authenticity or worthiness of any pop musician makes you sound like you don't understand how the world actually goes around. None of them were gods, boys.

This is by far the best post I have read about JM so far. In interviews he has admited that this was his plan from the begining to become famous with pop music and then start to sneak blues back into the main stream. Alot of his early music is not exactly the type of music you expect from a "Guitar Hero" but over the years he has let it go a little at a time and I am really excited to see what he has to offer in the future. He doesnt take himself to serious and he is not afraid to laugh at himself and poke fun at himself in the media. He has played with guys that most people on this forum could only dream to meet. I think a lot of people dont like him because he is living the life that we could only dream to have. To play with the legends he has played with and earn their respect is something that very few people can do.

Thanks, Steve. See, it's okay for me to say it out loud because I'm 52... one of the now-middled-aged guys.... except for some reason i was way more interested in music than in guitar playing, and so I never bought into any kind of religion about Guitar Gods. For my money, Larry Carlton, Drew Zingg and Oz Noy are better players than Hendrix, SRV or John Mayer. :D

Look at all the kids that want to play like him, he sure seems to be a Guitar Hero.

When I was young and into Stevie, the guy who showed me the Pentatonic Scale said Stevie was all Flash, no Heart. A Hendrix Imitator who couldn't play as well as Clapton, Santana, Johnny Winter, or any of his Idols, and they couldn't play as good as Lary Carlton, Joe Pass, Al DiMioli, Lee Retniour(sp?), or any of the Jazz guys he discovered after seeing that Jazz was the only music worth playing..........Sound Familiar?

Mayer's Heroism doesn't mean I have to like his style, nor does my Jazz Snob "Guitar Teacher" had to like SRV, but we have to accept them.

I agree with crying strat, the "Is Mayer Worthy" threads are over done, but this one doen't compare him to everyone who ever played a Strat. Which I find interesting. How come no one askes, "Who's Better? John Mayer or Johnny Winter?" Maybe if Mayer played a Firebird, he'd have less compitition. :)
