Look at ESP LTDs. The M-100 starts out under $300 and you get 24 extra jumbo frets and a licensed double locking Floyd Rose. The stock humbuckers are good, but somewhat muddy but, with the money you have left over, you can have EMGs (or whatever you prefer) put in. The neck is a little thinner and wider then a Strat neck. That paired with the extra jumbo frets is made for shred.

I have the M-100 FM and am happy with it. I bought it because it has humbuckers and I needed a guitar with humbuckers for recording. It is a great guitar to begin with, but it lends its self quite well to upgrades.

Someone else mentioned Ibanez. I have not played one in a long time, but may people I know that have them are happy with them. You should look into them as well.

Isn't this a Fender board? Since he asked this on a Fender board I'd think he want's a Fender answer. At least I hope he want's a Fender answer.

He asked for a guitar for metal/shred, for $500 or under. Fender does not make one, in my opinion, that would be what he would want. Therefore, I told him about something that should help him.

I know this is a Fender board. My main guitar is an '05 American. I have owned other Strats and a few Telecasters. It's not as if I'm bashing Fender. However, nothing sucks worse than spending money on a guitar that is not what you wanted knowing you will not get what you paid for it in a trade or resale.

I am not so brand loyal as to screw someone. If this doen't make me a good Fender.com member then so be it.

I understand what you're saying, but this is a Fender board. Fender spends money to support this board so we can discuss all things Fender. I highly doubt it would make them happy to see it being used to promote other brands of guitars. Discussing other brands and recommending them are two different things. There's plenty of shredders out there doing just fine with Fender guitars.

I guess what I'm really saying is that if he doesn't like Fender for his style of playing, this isn't the place to come and say "I don't like Fender can you suggest a different guitar for me." There's plenty of other boards if that's the info he wants.

Then Fender is more then welcome to delete my post and be one of the few (and would be the only one I have seen) that does not allow such comments.

I never said Fender doesn't allow that. I did it myself a few times before I realised it wasn't really right.

Back to the original meaning of the thread....

He's playing a Squire and doesn't like it. That doesn't mean a good MIM or Highway One wouldn't make him real happy. And...there's no reason why a strat can't be used for shredding. Just offering a Fender alternative.

The market for "shred" guitars on a budget is huge. Best option is to wander down to a local guitar shop and try a couple out. There are a few obvious things to keep an eye out for, humbuckers usually deliver the best (imo) metal/shred sound, a neck with 24 frets gives you a little more space to shred, and guitars with a double cut away/superstrat style body provide easy access to the higher frets. Brands such as Ibanez, ESP/LTD, Jackson etc would be a good place to start. Bear in mind though, alot of guitars aimed at a metal consumer have double locking trems, which can be a real pain to re-string and set-up at first, after a little practice though you'll find it much easier. They also allow for Jeff Hanneman/Dimebag style divebombs and squeels, if that's what you're into

Just remember to try a couple of guitars out, buying something that looks "metal" doesn't necessarily mean it will play as well as you'd like. I've played a Squire Telecaster that had a really nice chunky metal-style sound with the right amp settings, the pickups were incredibly responsive, whilst I've played some Ibanez guitars that sound aweful playing metal. A brand name is always nice to have, but it won't automatically make the axe play well.
