My suggestion is to go to music stores in your area and play all of them in your price range and find the one YOU like.

For that exact price range, try the Jimmy Vaughan strat. You wont be disappointed. Sounds killer and feels even better.

Yeah he's asking a question. If the question was about what guitar to get and I want a shredding metal guitar.I saying you might like Ibanez.
If that was not the question I would definitely say Fender.

Yeah, I'm definitely a Fender loyalist, but for metal shred, Fenders might not be what he needs. Ibanez puts out a lot of shreddy guitars in that price range.

Of the Fender models, though, he might want to look at the MIM Standard Fat Strat. That's mroe metal-friendly than most other Fenders, I think. Should run about $400. $600 with a hardcase and other accessories.

Shred for $500 check out a Fender Strat HSS Highway One with U.S. built quality and hot high-output oem pickups. I traded my SSS for vintagish Custom Shop TX Specials, because I'm not a shredder, but the oem Highway Ones are high output.

It really all depends on what type of music you plan on playing. If you're looking for something more bluesy or light rock, then obviously check out some Fender MiM guitars. Like stated before, an Ibanez or possibly a Schecter could suit a more metal playing style. Also consider some other brands like Epiphone or PRS with their les paul styled guitars. It really comes down to personal preference, so, like CAFeathers said, play everything in your price range. Don't go in set on one guitar or brand because you'll likely miss out on some great guitars.

Look at ESP LTDs. The M-100 starts out under $300 and you get 24 extra jumbo frets and a licensed double locking Floyd Rose. The stock humbuckers are good, but somewhat muddy but, with the money you have left over, you can have EMGs (or whatever you prefer) put in. The neck is a little thinner and wider then a Strat neck. That paired with the extra jumbo frets is made for shred.

I have the M-100 FM and am happy with it. I bought it because it has humbuckers and I needed a guitar with humbuckers for recording. It is a great guitar to begin with, but it lends its self quite well to upgrades.

Someone else mentioned Ibanez. I have not played one in a long time, but may people I know that have them are happy with them. You should look into them as well.

He asked for a guitar for metal/shred, for $500 or under. Fender does not make one, in my opinion, that would be what he would want. Therefore, I told him about something that should help him.

I know this is a Fender board. My main guitar is an '05 American. I have owned other Strats and a few Telecasters. It's not as if I'm bashing Fender. However, nothing sucks worse than spending money on a guitar that is not what you wanted knowing you will not get what you paid for it in a trade or resale.

I am not so brand loyal as to screw someone. If this doen't make me a good Fender.com member then so be it.
