Am I the only one who's made a connection between John Mayer and Stevie Ray Vaughan?

The players were on two totally different playing fields, but I strongly believe that JM sound eerily like SRV.

I'd love to hear John do some more SRV covers with vocals. I'm thinking along the lines of Pride And Joy and Texas Flood.

Mayer has the perfect voice, sound, and ability to pull off some awesome SRV covers (I know he has done a few instrumentals in the past, but i've never heard any vocal performances of SRv covers).

Am I the only one who's made this connection? Surely I must not be

My personal opinion:

John Mayer is not even in the same league as Stevie Ray Vaughan. JM is a wannabe SRV and that is it.

I agree that he is not in the same league. However, I will say that I am impressed with John Mayer's playing. But to compare him to SRV is a bit much.

(after careful consideration I have completely reverted my opinion of Mr. Mayer, so the contents of this post are outdated)

I just want to say I am a big JM fan and I agree that there are a lot of similarities between the two of them. Im not saying that they are quite on the same level yet but give him some time. I think he will surprise everyone.

Of course there's a connection! JM was heavily influenced by SRV and Hendrix! Heck, the first time I saw him on TV, he was playing with SRV's old backupband, Double Trouble. And on Continuum Mayer covers a Hendrix tune. I've seen him doing Hendrix on youtube quite a bit, too.

I've got a lot of respect for JM, he's one of the best blues players under 30 (I prefer Joe Bonamassa in this category, though). He's certainly the most commercially successful current blues player under 30! That said, most of his recording is more blues-influenced pop than actual blues. In his live settings he does more of the real deal, though.

The thing I like most about JM, though, is the way he just LOVES to play. I watched an interview with him on MSN a while back (in conjunction with a concert of his they broadcasted to promote Continuum). He was saying how he considers the Stratocaster to be the most beautiful thing in the world and how he's still in awe that he gets to play guitar for a living. He said he still has that child-like joy of playing the guitar. That's awesome and quite inspirational. I don't think I'd have bought a Strat if it hadn't been for JM. I'd probably have bought an archtop instead.

Like us who are after SRV Mayer is influenced by SRV. Mayer also covers SRV, and he covers Hendrix tunes that SRV also covered, like Little Wing. For the difference, watch SRV play Little Wing and then watch Mayer do it. That's right, Mayer sings and SRV didn't sing on that one. Mayer sings well.

Mayer has a great sense of melody and he's written some great pop-blues songs. As a musician, compared to Clapton or SRV, Mayer is developing and improving from a high level. Playing his own stuff, Mayer sounds good. Like, when he's playing Crossroads with Clapton on Youtube from ABC, Mayer sounds good, playing Blues in A around the 10th and 12 frets. Then Clapton plays and your jaw drops while he's playing Crossroads all over the fret board and generally just an outstanding musician. So, you watch Mayer do Little Wing on YouTube and he's good. I mean, he's really playing some very difficult riffs, and very clearly quoting SRV. Then you watch SRV and you realize Mayer's time seems to slow and get a little off, like he's struggling at some points, compared to the incredible SRV. So is Mayer at the level of Clapton and SRV? As a singer, yes. As a songwriter it's hard to argue with multiple grammies, nominations, platinum records, and personally I like his stuff. As a musician he's very good but not as good yet. Clapton wasn't Derek yet when he was with the Yardbirds, either..

This is a good time to highjack the thread, and start Birdwalking away from the subject.

So, did Johnny Cash write the "Wreck of the Ol' '97", or did he just cover it?

Finally, an intelligent response and someone who answered without bashing John Mayer or taking my words as a shot at the legacy of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Thank you, and I completely agree!

It's good to see someone as successful as John Mayer paying homage to his idol and honoring his legacy by constantly covering him live. It's also a plus that he shares many similarities in vocal styling.
