IMHO:
Just wanting to share my first exposure to the biggest influence and inspiration to play and play a Stratocaster in my life; not the only one but certainly the largest.
It must have been '73 or '74; I found the LP of DericK & The Dominos In Concert. I knew they did Layla and I knew EC was in the band so I bought it. I was on a Clapton kick then (still am) trying to get all I could from him.
Man I'm an OLD GUY! I digress.
I took that LP home shut myself up in my room and was totally blown away with the guitar, drums and bass; the key boards were great but nothing earth shattering...
It was then I discovered my most loved music and my favorite guitar tone.
When I saw EC last March here in Seattle he played some of those songs; unfortunatly (in some ways) he wasn't the same man he was when he did those concerts but it was hearing him play those songs LIVE and I was THERE that just put me in tears; it was a life changing event for me; hearing those recordings back in the day and especially in March.
Sooooo IMHO this is some of the best Stratocaster playing to be found; not to take anything away from others that came before or after.
EC's use of the Wa pedal is sometimes subtle and others pronounce but always tatseful, and dramatic as well.
Besides just WHAT was he doing on that Strat? He played things on there I still haven't heard others do except maybe SRV; little 2 or 3 note combinations... I don't know if you can call them chords... just really sublime playing.
I'm no great transcriber but there's stuff (most of it) in there that totally escapes me and NOBODY I ever heard of offers a transcription of that live performance.
Go check it out; get the CD, turn the lights down low and the stereo up and listen to the sutble Wa work while EC takes you on a Journey through the Universe.
IMHO

I stumbled across both the CD (deluxe version from the early 90s) AND the LP in an old used record store in Paris. Both were severly battered, but the sound is still great.

Why does Love got to be So Sad's solo is one of the best I've ever heard, though I have to say EC's singing could have been better. But hey, it's part of the charm 8)

I read that this was the first time Eric sang much or at all; I don't remember for sure. I think he sang with Cream and other bands but not solos. I do know that Bobby Whitlock (the other only surviving member of the band) sang to give Eric confidence to sing at all.
I know I can't sing and play at the same time so I'm no one to critize.
Man ALL the solos are some of the best I have ever heard! :D
Let It Rain is performed in a manner not as sappy as the studio release and the guitar work is WOW. My Fav is ((It's) Got To Get Better In A Little While Have You Ever Loved A Woman is the most blistering blues I've ever heard Eric play. Cut's like a knife; right to the core.
I could make the same comment for all the selections in this collection.
FYI The LP (In Concert) release is or was available on CD.
I wrote to Mobility Sound Lab in 1981 requesting they add this to their catalog; they sent me a copy of the current one with a blah blah blah letter. Then in the late 90s they released it on a gold CD....
For those that don't know Mobility Sound Labs buys rights to classic LPs and re-released them on high grade vinal using top of the line remastering and production techniques to produce a premium LP. You played it once maybe twice; cassette tape recorder recording and put it away then played ytour tape till it wore out and recorded the LP again.
they now produce CDS...
The Release of "Live at the Filmore" contains many of the same cuts that are on the "in Concert" release and some that weren't released before due to mistakes or bad recordings; I don't know for sure. One of the reasons I admire Eric is that he will release stuff that shows he screwed up...Like his slide playing as well as non slide on the Filmore release.
I have some video from the 80s showing a very nervous Eric playing with Phil Collins; some prerecorded stuff was used during the concert; if you watch closly it you'll see what I mean; guitar when his hands aren't moving; girls singing backups...

He sang the vocals in Strange Brew when with Cream. he also alternated vocals with Jack in White Room. I've been listening to Cream, Derek and EC all day!
