I wouldn't know since I've never gigged. But I've been to many local gigs so I can add this one. When drunk people insist of roading for you, put their beer on top of the amp head just to knock it down and have all that beer spill on your $5000 rig.

You did that, didn't you?

That's how you know about that one.
First hand experience.

I had a guy jump on stage once and start fiddling around with my amp. He said, its ok I'm a guitar player. I kneed him in the chest, the bartender took him off stage and we kept on playing!

You know you're a musician when you tell the crowd you take requests and some drunk ask you to play "Slow Talkin' Walter".

You have to really, REALLY love playing to put up with all crap that occurs in the music business!

Though there are some really good gigs out there if you're lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time.

Some day soon I'll buy a real amp and start looking for a band to play with, and hopefully gig. I'm not a musician at the moment.

this is my favorite................
a non-musician friend or co-worker asks about your weekend. you respond that you played a gig over the weekend. they say "cool, that sounds like fun". you say "sure i guess it was".
practice, tearing down, transporting, setting up, sound check, waiting 6 more hours to play, playing the gig, mingling, tear down, transport and home.
for me it is well worth it. the fun part doesn't last long enough. if i added up all my earnings i might be able to buy a tank of gasoline. maybe.

+1

The hoi polloi is, for the most part, clueless when it comes to the business side of a live rock act -- even just a piss-ant three-piece ensemble that only plays rinky-dink four-stool saloons.

LOL no, but I used to roadie/manage my friend's band back in '07 or so, and actually saw a singer put a water bottle on top of one of the guitar player's head and the guitarist knocked it over not knowing it was there. Thankfully the water spilt on the floor so nothing happened. The look the guitarist gave to the singer was priceless though.

Also, I think it goes without saying but have someone keeping an eye on your gear. My friend's cymbal bag was stolen, thankfully it only had two spare Zildjian K cymbals inside, still about $400 worth. His kit has 10 cymbals, imagine if that bag was full!

I used to know this old retired pastor that used to play in some local country bands. He's dead now. Back in the mid 90's he had a 1952 Telecaster that he bought new as a kid stolen from his van as he was loading out after a gig. There were 4 numbers in his serial number and the first one was a zero. Really early Tele. Somebody clearly recognised the guitar for what it was. He said the cops told him it likely went to Japan.

Once or twice in my long career of gigging I have had compliments which I treasure - they ALL came from other musicians!
