Been working on a killer technique exercise I'd like to share.

Once you've got your pentatonic patterns down in all five "boxes," work up to ascending and descending patterns in odd beats.

For instance, your "E" pentatonic shape looks like this (in G):

Code:
------------------------------------3--6--------
-----------------------------3--6---------------
----------------------3--5----------------------
---------------3--5-----------------------------
--------3--5------------------------------------
-3--6-------------------------------------------

Work it with a metronome and through all pentatonic shapes.

Start with patterns of 3 notes to a click (accent lines = clicks):

3 notes to a click:

Code:
 |         |          |         |
------------------------------------3--6--------
-----------------------------3--6---------------
----------------------3--5----------------------
---------------3--5-----------------------------
--------3--5------------------------------------
-3--6-------------------------------------------

Then get them with 4 notes to a click... so far so good.

Now get them in ascending and descending patterns. Here is an example of 3 notes per click in 3 note ascending patterns:

Code:
 |         |          |         |
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------3------3---5-----
--------3-----3---5---3---5-----5------------
-3--6------6---------------------------------- etc..

Then get them in 4 notes per click in 4 note patterns...

Now for the killer (for me), do 3 notes per click in 4 note patterns:

Code:
 |          |          |          |
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
-----------------------------------------------
---------------------------3----------3---5---
--------3---5------3---5-------3--5------------
-3--6----------6------------------------------ etc..

Then get 4 notes per click in 3 note patterns... and for you technically advanced, try skipping strings for each pentatonic pattern.

Hope that makes sense and isnt too hard to read... helping me tremendously.

No tab to show, but another good warm-up/practice for scales is to do groupings. Start with the straight scale. Then go 1-2-3, 2-3-4, 3-4-5 and the opposite descending. Then go 1-2-3-4, 2-3-4-5, then 1-2-3-4-5, 2-3-4-5-6, and so on. Basically you add a note to the pattern after ascending/descending. You'll find the odd patterns (5/7/9 notes) alternate syncopatically. To make it more interesting try it in 4/4 and then in 6/4 and also do dump-dee-dump (dotted alternating notes).

Might be interesting if this kind of stuff--excercises, scales, technique--had it's own forum. I don't know where suggestions are made here but that's my two cents.

I agree with you wickedmartini, that would be cool to have a players forum to discuss how to play this and that and people could post free tabs for songs.

Free tabs of parts of songs maybe - but entire songs might get Fender in deep frying oil. There is an active scurge going around pulling tabbed songs offline due to copyrights (whether or not it is the 'interpretation' of the notator). Really sad...really stupid.

It would be good to have a section for technique, exercises and other practice related topics. This way you just need to look in one place.

AN excellent idea! But as was mentioned we got to keep actual songs out to keep Fender's liabilty nil.

Funnily enough, that first teqnuice is the exact one I normally use. Another idea is to use arpeggios basically, if you're in E Minor, you use the notes E, G, B, and E over and over again until you reach the highest fret and then you come down again. It sounds so much like something, hmmm. Let me think... ARPEGGIOS FROM HELL!!!!! Try it as fast as Malmsteen, I can nearly do it. Give it a try. Just watch the Arpeggios From Hell Youtube video for an example. :D

Thats a great warm up excerise :)

As well as scales I quite like to do this kinda thing:

Code:
E:----------12-9----------|--------11-8---------|
B:-------11------10-------|-----10------9-------|
G:----10------------11----|---9-----------10----|
D:--9------------------12-|-8----------------11-|
A:------------------------|---------------------|
E:------------------------|---------------------|

I do these too. These are very good for arpeggios and string-string picking. I go across the strings, moving the pattern up or down a string while descending or ascending.
