I was wondering can you replace a tube rectifier with a ss rectifier or vice-versa? (sorry if it sounds stupid)

Technically yes it would be possible but you would need to really know what you are doing.

Best to leave well alone. If you feel the need for choice better to buy two different amps

Groove Tubes used to have a solid-state replacement for rectifiers, I once had a '59 Bassman RI that had one for the GZ 34/5AR4, it was simply a direct 'plug in' replacement, it looked like a tube/valve base encased in rubbery Orange covering. They might still offer it, but I don't know if this requires any rebiasing of the power tubes or not.

It's funny-lots of people look at the GZ 34 as the Holy Grail of rectifiers-but I've also heard that they have the LEAST 'sag' of tube/valve rectifiers-where 5Y3's (as in old tube/valve Champs) 'sag' quite a bit. In other words, maybe having a solid state replacement for a GZ 34 isn't such a bad idea, since diodes don't 'sag' at all. But please (and I really mean this) correct me if I'm wrong. GZ 34s aren't getting any cheaper!

Check out Weber's Copper Cap as a simple plug in to a tube rectifier slot.
