I have to give some credit to my older brothers. They didn't play nor did anyone I knew growing up for that matter but I would sneak in their room and "borrow" records and tapes.

The players that grabbed me from their collections were David Gilmour, Mike Campbell, Tom Scholz and Steve Clark to name a few.

I didn't get a guitar until I was 16 and by that time my folks had moved to Clearwater FL where the scene where I lived was all Tampa Bay Death Metal so was a bit out of place with my friends being into Cannibal Corpse while I was more into Keith Scott so It was difficult to learn from those cats as I was just not into playing that stuff. In hind site, I wish I had mad a better effort in finding some folks that played rock and blues. Probably would have been able to learn a lot and progress a lot further than where I had

Cheers

Not the trendy pick, but Richie Sambora for me. The pinch harmonics in the solo and then seeing it live in 1988  . Still gives me goosebumps.

Robbie Robertson inspired me.
Not only to play, but to go down the single coil path. A path I still tread today.
As The Band's albums got spottier, Robbie's tone and style kept getting better, to the point that he was basically providing orchestration for the songs. Check out "Rags and Bones".
Add Garth Hudson's sometimes earthy, sometimes etherial, keys and this stuff has stayed with me for decades.

Thanks Robbie.

Thanks Taurus, had not heard "Rags and Bones" before. You are right, it's quite nice.

Etherial? Oops, should have been ethereal. Sorry.

Etherial is what Elmer Fudd has for breakfast.

"Yup, this thread was done before Oh well.

Les Paul had a 5-minute piece years ago in Chitown before the 6 PM news. He played 2 songs per day.

Then came The Ventures and realization; melodic guitar could be a whole life-playing style."

JSJH said so, there have a few of these threads but this one predates me. Thanks for resurrecting this Mike as I haven't seen many of these posters in a long time.

My cousin Angelo (stage name Thad Erican) was a country/western guitarist and singer that was popular locally after he got out of the Army and the Korean war. I loved watching and listening to him play when he would come to our house with his guitar for a visit with family. He let me hold his guitar to my surprise and smiled at the look on my face, then confided to my parents that they should get me a guitar and recommended his teacher. Every guitar player I heard after that was an influence. Favorites are the usual suspects lol.

JSJH, "Les Paul had a 5-minute piece years ago in Chitown before the 6 PM news. He played 2 songs per day." Wishing I could remember that, I must have seen it back then.

It was the sounds of...
Alan Holdsworth
Steve Hackett
Adrian Belew
Steve Howe
Alex Lifeson
Steve Hillage
... that made me say "yeah, I think I'd like to do that"

But it the sound of Mark Knopfler that made me want Strats.

Now I don't sound like any of those guys.
But learned by listening to them.
Now I just sound like me.

The Beatles. Absolutely fell in love with their music as a young girl & saw "Let It Be" as a very young girl in the theatre. and I knew that's what I wanted to do-tho my 1st choice was drums (mom said no way!) Later inspirations was Led Zeppelin, and believe it or not,The Boston Pops with Arthur Fiedler conducting. (I've always had a wide range of taste in music)

I would have to say my friends as a child. I was the only one of them that could play at all but I was awful. They used to make me sit and learn Zeppelin songs and would not let me stop until I got a section down. One of those friends eventually became my manager. But perhaps that was more "force" then inspiration lol.

As far as which bands/artists inspired me most it is hard to pinpoint but my parents always played the Stones and Hendrix and Joplin and Dylan and stuff like that and it made me want to get a guitar.
