To narrow it down to a single inpiration, in the late 50's, it would have to be the Everly Brothers who inspired me, although Santo and Johnny, Venture's, and musicians, Dick Dale, the Beach Boys, Duane Eddy, to name a few, were among those during that period that had an influence.

For me it was John Entwistle for the bass, and Pete Townshend for the guitar. Rip John

In high school I played air guitar, air bass, air drums, air keyboards, and air sax to Rush, Pink Floyd, Yes, and other bands. After high school I went in the Army, and wanted to learn either drums or guitar. When I was shown to my room at the barracks in Germany, my new room mate "BP" was sitting on his bed with a guitar playing Stairway To Heaven. So, BP is the reason I play guitar.

That was in 1978, and BP went home in 1979 (I believe). Fast forward to 2013 and I finally found him again via Facebook. He sure was surprised to hear from me after all these years!

I thought about sending him a bill for all of the money I've wasted on gear I no longer own.

For me, it was visiting my grandparents and hanging out with my cousin Mike. He had a guitar that was kind of in the style of Eddie VanHalen's 'Frankenstein' (stripes) but it was an explorer style body.

He turned me on to so many bands too, Black Sabbath, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, etc. Mostly heavy classic rock stuff. Gotta give most of the credit to cousin Mike, and the rest goes to my mom for letting me get a guitar, take lessons, and for paying for all of it.

When I actually started playing guitar in 1989, the two guys I wanted to play like were Keith Richards and Muddy Waters. Soon thereafter, Mick Taylor was added to the list. To this day, there are huge traces of Keef and McKinley in my playing, but for some reason there's not a lot of Mr. Taylor. :?:

But interestingly enough, I had wanted to play MANY years before because of Joe Walsh. His playing, his humor and specifically the song "Life's Been Good" was very inspiring to the eight-year-old Armadillo.

Another inspiration was a friend of my brother's who always had the coolest (and loudest) gear. He was the first (non-celebrity) I ever knew of that had multiple guitars; when I was a kid he was on a Music Man Sabre II kick, and had no less than 25 of those particular guitars (maybe more). He also collected Peavey T-60s, various G&Ls [especially F-100 models, possibly because if their similarity to the Sabre II), and Fender '57 Stratocaster Reissues. The last time I talked to him, he had over 60 guitars, several HUGE Peavey PA systems and a bunch of Music Man and Fender amps (most of which are 80 watts or more). All of us in that social circle spoke in hushed tones, reverently admiring his herd, and since he was the best guitarist most of us knew personally, we assumed he was awesome.

My first electric guitar (a G&L F100) and amp (a solid state 1970's Gibson G-20) had each been owned by him at one time (he had sold or given them to his younger brother, who sold them to me). Both he and his brother have asked many times to buy that guitar back, but I still have it, 25 years later.

However, two things struck me after I developed a small amount of proficiency on the instrument--first of all, the guy was very derogatory and belittling of other peoples bands, playing, songs or abilities. He has a chip on his shoulder the size of Nebraska; that might be related to the second thing:
The guy was NOT a great guitar player. He could play the intro and rhythm line of dozens of songs (which was useful to the few bands he's been in over the years). but that was about it. Two of his younger brothers played, and either of them could blow his doors off; after I had been playing for a few years, I could keep up with him--and I still wasn't that good! However, he (and his brother that sold me the G&L) both told me I wasn't any good and should just stick to harmonica.
I guess I should thank them, because I decided I would learn to so something neither of them could do--play slide. I always liked slide guitar, but that was the impetus to dedicate myself to mastering that particular technique, and that's what I eventually became known for.

Jim Turner, guitarist for the Jennifer Flowers band (remember her?). When I was an early teenager he used to hang out at the Jacksonville, AR guitar store where I hung out. He is/was amazing and very inspirational.

The rest are the usual suspects:

Johnny Winter
Jimmy Page
John Lennon (mostly songwriting genius but the Get Back and Revolution solos were just like him, out of the box, love them).
George Harrison
Paul McCartney (blackbird was a milestone for me)
Pete Townsend
Keith Richards
Jeff Beck

edit: I forgot Jimi Hendrix. How could I?
If they were British ( except Texan Johnny Winter, and Jimi) and from that era, I probably worshipped them.

It would be Eric Clapton pretty much got me interested in the guitar, got some sheet music of his songs and started learning.
I also took a few years off and it was Jeff Beck that got me re-interested in a huge way.

George Harrison, Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain. I remember watching their live concert videos for hours on end back in 2009 just to look at the way they played.

P.S. Jimi Hendrix's a beast! I love his playing style. :D
