Okay this is what I've managed to find out direct from Fender USA. They are Japanese made. There is 150 of each colour made and they are only available to the North American market and they wont sell to anyone living outside of there. Gutted.

....and you find out who is stocking them by trial and error I suppose. I hope asking is not going to elicit one of those typical 'never heard of 'em' or 'NAMM'responses from the dealer elites.

True.....but not exactly your kind of Beatles gear 'D'...unless you're talking a Rosewood Tele.....or some kind of psychedelic Strat. :?

As a Danelectro fan, I was intrigued when my preferred marque, Fender, put out a lipstick tube-powered Squire model in my favorite color--seafoam green. I own a Dano Pro, a '63, and Dead-On '67 and love these guitars despite their inexpensive construction. However, the Squire version had neither the tone nor feel that I was expecting out of a much more solid-bodied instrument.

This is where the Fender version comes in. Although I have not tried this new incarnation, the price is prohibitively expensive. I am sure, though, that the upper-end model is a vast improvement on the lower-end Squire.

Since the Danelectro buyer is the demographic, Fender ought to make three modifications to remain competitive with that market.

First, the jangle-sound of lipstick-tube pickups is mostly associated with the 1960s. Thus, the Fender models need to come in "groovy" colors instead of basic red, blue, or white. Danelectro is know for wild tones from orange to psychedelic, and the seafoam green Squire was a look to the right direction.

Second, the lipstick tubes on the Fender appear chromed and look out of place on such an iconic instrument. It just looks cheap. A matte finish or brushed metal surface would help tone down the brightness of the overly-shiny surface. Ditto the rest of the hardware such as tuners and bridge. These pieces already should be available in the Fender inventory for minimal cost.

Finally, the price is a bit on the extreme end for a fringe-model Fender. Danelectro does the job just fine out of masonite and a $250 price tag. A lipstick tube equipped Fender would be light-years ahead of the bargain-basement Dalenectro but doesn't need the relatively astronomical price tag.

I do not think most Fender buyers would gravitate to the lipstick tube model as their main instrument. Therefore, this model is more likely a second, more specialized tool and thus needs to be more competitively priced.

On the other hand, the quality of design of a Stratocaster equipped with the lipstick tube pickups should make for a dream instrument of fans such as myself, and I applaud Fender in its attempt to break into the lipstick tube market.

I sometimes look back fondly to my '60 Dano black twin short horned six stringer w/twin pups. In my 'crowd' around '59-60 we also sported a copper single pup model and three of the new convertibles. There were also three Dano Centurion amplifiers. The odd men out, however sported a '58 Strat and a '59 Gretsch Duo Jet [which he still owns]. Then came the Fender Concert Amp to support the Strat, and an Ampeg Rocket for the Gretsch. In '62 the Strat gave way to the new Jaguar and the Concert to a Dual Showman. The Strat and the Concert came to me. We've been Fender gear people these past 50 years or more. None of the Danos were ever played through the Fender amplifiers and I trust that some of the tone which collectors covet has more to do with the amps doing these guitars justice along with many of the other 'toys' which have come along since then. As far as playability and tone quality of these Dano reissues compared to my four Strats, the Fenders will be my choice always, Jimmy Page not withstanding.
