As some of you may know, I am a hardcore Star Wars geek. Disney just bought Lucasfilm for $4.05 billon. Now they have plans to make Star Wars episode 7, 8 and 9. As much as I have always wanted more Star Wars movies, I am afraid that this will further tarnish the already tarnished franchise. The original trilogy was fantastic. It was groundbreaking and paved the way for the summer blockbuster. The prequel trilogy was good (IMO) but it could have done without a few things. (Jar Jar, midichlorians, Mannequin Skywalker). Then George Lucas had to tinker with everything, a few times. Now Mickey Mouse will be directing whats left of my childhood memories.

This is terrifying news indeed.

I swear, if the next movie stars the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus or any other Disney brats I'm going to blow up Disney headquarters.

What in the world got into George Lucas?? If he doesn't have anything to do with the making of the next three films I will NOT be seeing them, unless they look really good. If they're the quality of the first pirates movie then I may give them a chance.

Mickey will be Luke Skywalker, Goofy will be Hans Solo and Donald will be "Duck Vader"!

Sorry, I couldn't resist. While not a huge fan of the movies, I share your dread, this isn't gonna be good.

Or... it could be awesome.

Disney also bought Marvel, and IMO The Avengers was still pretty darn cool.

Besides, Lucas already wrote the treatments for eps. 7, 8, and 9... and the person in charge of Lucasfilm under Disney was hand-picked by Lucas himself, and is a long time Lucasfilm big-wig. Montgomery, I think, I forgot her first name... point is, Disney is likely going to play it smart, and let Lucasfilm run itself as it has been, for the most part. They just now foot the bill and reap the financial rewards, like with Marvel.

I for one am being cautiously optimistic over this... Looking at how George handled the prequels and the re-hashing of the original trilogy, passing the torch may have been the BEST thing he could have done for the franchise. He's handed off large portions of the directing and writing duties in the past, with great results. This is just the next step in the evolution, and in preparation for Star Wars to outlive its' creator, much as Star Trek has and will.

Lets think good thoughts and hope that someone investing 4 billion might have the brains to put out some quality movies on a tried and true subject. Of course they might also try to work flubber into it.....
I wonder if I can play the theme for them? NO wait, I suck.....

You do have a point MacGyver. Lucas has shown us how he himself can meddle too much with a good thing. I guess we wait and see what happens in 2015. I know I'll rant and rave about it, but who's going to be waiting in line at the local premier, fully dressed in Jedi robes? Me of course!

I'm actually really excited and happy about it, and I'm a huge Star Wars nerd. I only got on board about seven years ago, when I saw the original trilogy at a friend's house and luckily caught Revenge of the Sith before it left theaters. My little brother is really going crazy (in a good way), because he totally missed out on seeing any Star Wars movie when it was new and he never thought they'd make another.

I think it's a really good thing actually, look at Marvel and Pixar. They're both still turning out good movies with Disney, and I think that Star Wars will be the same. And nothing Disney can make could possibly be worse than Attack of the Clones. As an avid Star Wars novel reader, I'm really more concerned that they may completely negate all the Extended Universe stories about what happens post-Return of the Jedi. Will they use the same new characters introduced in the books, or will they throw them out completely? I have some favorite characters from the books who I'd really like to see turn up in the movies.

In any case, I'll be doing the same thing as yodacaster and see the local premier fully dressed in Jedi robes! :D

Kathleen Kennedy, and, I could retire nicely for $4 plus billion dollars, mostly in cash, and some sweet stock options. Juts buy the island of Bora Bora. Bail out Fender and pick up some super sweet Custom Shop guitars. Finally get my pilots license and invite all my friends out to the island for a texas style bar-b-cue in the way southwest pacific! Yep.

I think it was the initial shock of Disney being the new owner that had me all revved up. I actually yelled NOOOOO! twice in my car while I was driving to work this morning. I know I'll warm up to it sooner or later. Hopefully Disney will not go back and re-edit anything else and only concentrate on the upcoming movies. I have also heard they want to keep releasing them every few years. It looks like it could be headed down the same road as Star Trek (thanks Mac). As far as directors, I am hopng they consider Spielberg and Peter Jackson.

+1 on Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Spielberg does science fiction like nobody else, and Jackson is just a great director all around. It would be interesting to see how either one of them would handle a star wars movie.

I doubt they could screw it up any worse than Lucas did with stuff like Jar Jar Binks. What the hell was up with that dude, anyway? I remember, when I was a little kid, seeing the first three films in the theater when they first came out and I had a lot of those original toys and comic books. The funny thing is I think all of that stuff is worth money now. There is a chance I might still have some of that stuff stored somewhere with my parents house in Florida. At least the comic books. I don't what condition they would be in since they would probably be in a garage for almost 30 years in plastic tote bins.

Speaking of Disney, anyone remember a movie they made (think it was 1978) called "The Black Hole?" That wasn't exactly a kid-friendly film. I remember seeing that one, too. It was rather dark and creepy film. At least it seemed that way back then.

IMHO, since Michael Eisner, for every project at Disney, Profit is Job One.

Now that's good for making Cars and Widgets, but for the Arts, usually not so much !

In order to maximize appeal, Disney has a tendency to Homogenize everything. Sorta like Taco Bell touting it's food as 'Mexican'...

Back in the day, alot of Walt's projects were financial flops initially, but that didn't stop his vision, not quite the same today.

Let's hope the trend doesn't continue...

cheers!

+1

The Star Wars franchise (and its continuing "saga") has less significance to me than the size, shape, color, and consistency of my turds.

I couldn't name any three actors appearing in the last five Star Wars movies but I damn sure remember every line of dialog in "Old Yeller".

Disney hasn't made a decent film in decades. And come to think of it, neither has George Lukas.
