You asked this same question yesterday with the topic: "Who is the best guitarist".

I think I'm getting tired.

I saw Phil Keaggy live (in small music halls) 2 or 3 times in the early 80s. I can't say enough about his talent. He really cut loose on guitar back then, live that is. I want to say that he was using a drinking glass over his pickups to get e-bow effects but maybe he was actually using a e-bow. But for some reason I could swear it was a drinking glass.

I have never heard any Phil Keaggy studio album that really showed his talent on guitar. I think maybe he had to tone things down a bit for the Christian music industry but that's just a speculation. There was a live "Second Chapter of Acts" LP back in the day that had some excellent Keaggy guitar playing.

Haven't heard anything he's done in the last 10 years. Maybe there's some good recent recordings out there.

I think maybe Keaggy doesn't get the respect he deserves because I can see why his albums would be hard for someone to listen to who didn't want to hear about Jesus on every song. Never stopped me though. :-)

On a related note, I saw an interview with Keaggy that said that he didn't remember Hendrix (or Clapton, etc.) saying he was the best guitarist -- although the legend continues.

I think that once you hit a certain level of musicianship, comparisons become meaningless, or misleading at best. I mean Keaggy and Hendrix are very different. Technically I am sure Keaggy blows Hendrix away, but no one to this day has matched the originality and passionate playing that Hendrix achieved before he was 28 years old! I couldn't really compare Keaggy to Hendrix in that way.

And as far as technique, Eric Johnson, John McLaughlin, Steve Morse, and quite a few other guitarists are right up there with him.

But I will agree with you that Keaggy is definitely a rare and special bird.

I have a DVD, "Together Live!", of a benefit concert he and Randy Stonehill did for Compassion International. And I was blown away by his use of an acoustic electric, pedals, and a Jam Man looper. The guy was juggling layered tracks on the fly. It's amazing! I've seen very few guitarists who can play nearly the gamut of styles (from rock to classical and all points in between) as well as he can. He did several of his early albums on 4 track cassette recorders so I wasn't surprised by his proficiency on the Jam Man, just amazed how easy he makes it look. He's definitely one of my guitar heroes. He also is a Fender player, as you can see in the background of this youtube of "Shades of Green": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T89MVl2NcPg

Unfortunately, it's not in it's entirety.
