Do you like Yngwie Malmsteen? His playing? His dress-sense? His guitar? Let me know!

I like his music and his playing..
Not so much is style of dress though.

His guitar, well I personally can't play on a fretboard that is completely scalloped. Maybe the top few frets, but with the whole thing, I can't do.

I really liked his first 5 albums: Rising Force, Marching Out, Trilogy, Odyssey, and Live in Leningrad, but after most of his albums never seemed to be as good as the first 5.

His playing is good, though I am not really into the medieval-renaissance influenced attire and spandex that was worn in those days...

YJM freak-boy here. ;)

I was part of his fan club back in the day. I agree that the first four albums were great. 'Live at Leningrad' on, eh-hem, LaserDisc is pretty awesome. "Inspiration" is also very good if you like the covers that Yngwie does (very well).

The attitude, fat-swede, cool classical look are old since the 90's. He should lose some weight and change the costume. But an amazing player in every regard - including showmanship.

Unlike the USA which only wants Britney Spears, 50Cent, and Kevin Federline, he and other REAL!!!! musicians are big stars in Japan. Just watch American Id(iot)l to get a pulse of the (lack of) musicality engendered by the general populace. Most Americans wouldn't know music if a pre-expansionist-bison sized herd of good music trampled them repeatedly for a year... (thus the last 20 years of mostly crap).

Sad but true, mediocrity is king right now. It's a shame our music business is more into the look than the talent.

These are some bands from around the world that I've been listening to for the last 5 plus years:
Iron Saviour
Vanden Plas
Gamma Ray
Angra
Blind Guardian
Helloween
Children of Bodom
DC Cooper
Pink Cream 69

To me it's all technical ability and very little music going on.

Not to say he doesn't have a sense of musicality, far from it, but I just find the style of playing and the tone he often uses to be really boring and...well not very musical. In my opinion of course. I also detest the whole "Lets see how many notes we can get into these 4 bars" attitude.

I have the same problem with bands like Dragon Force too.

Each to his own I suppose.
