Colleagues at the old office on W 18th off 6th are on hiatus w/ power out south of 40th St. Transportation up the yin yang anyway. Many of them are from NJ and the outer boros. We were out a full week after 9/11 being just north of there back then. This a totally different deck of cards. :?

Doc,
Two numbers that I still am amazed by:

1000 miles- The width of the entire storm system.
11.8 feet- The tidal surge at Battery park.
The storm's size was only out done by it's impact across the entire coast line, Battery Park has never seen water above 8 feet and that was in the 1800's. Watching the Holland Tunnel flooding out was unreal, at this writing all of the auo tunnels are still closed and word just came that the N train will resume tomorrow between Ditmars Blvd. and 34th Street.
Talking heads on TV have started calling this "The Storm of the Century" Given the general war zone appearance of the shore communities in the tri-state that's almost an understatement.
Stay safe,
John.E

You need to find your way back to a week ago today and watch the progress of the two weather systems which ultimately converged. Frontal systems moving west.east often form a line which runs the entire length of the eastern seaboard and the weather extends to the rear for quite some distance. Merge that, the mechanics of a developing no'easter whose winds are coming in clockwise from that direction, with a huge cyclonic storm rotating counterclockwise and moving in a northeasterly direction. When ultimately combined, it yields a double whammy onshore flow of hurricane force winds driving the sea in that direction and enhancement from a very low barometric pressure which raises the level of the sea as it is carried forward. It is those mechanics, the low pressure over the sea's surface, which elevates it, is what is known as storm surge. Mother Nature's hammer. Much has been written in contemporary 'song and story' about the effects of the total melting of the polar ice, the resulting increase in sea levels and the coastal inundation which would ensue. The possibility of any of these areas facing such a rise in sea level, even of a transitory nature, can be made real by the kind of energy witness this weekend. The question has always been.."is the juice worth the squeeze to construct barriers against such a probable event. The Japanese made that investment when they 'doubled down' on constructing tsunami seawalls given a best guestimate for design. Mother Nature dealth them 21 on both hands in 2011. Nothing surprises me where natural forces are concerned. I just remain in constant awe of the power of this universe of ours.

Did a telephone roll call of family and friends living in my native Connecticut. All are safe and sound (with one still in the dark).

just to add my notes, my area (Rockland County, NY) is still crippled by loss of power, trees down all over the place. I have an Aunt and an Uncle who live in coastal areas of Long Island (Amity Harbor and Island Park), both of their homes and one car are totally destroyed. But everyone's ok and this is what insurance if for, moving on.

I'm sending major mojo out to all those in the situation your relatives find themselves in. My concerns are due to the fact that The National Hurricane Center handed the storm off to The National Weather Center just about the time the storm came on shore and truly began to wreak havoc. The question of whether or not this storm was classified as a true 'hurricane' wind velocity notwithdstanding, may become an insurance issue.

Kinda late to the discussion here...

I live just south of Atlantic City, the eye of the storm passed right over us here, as bad as that sounds, the beaches further north of here actually got it worse than us. We took a pretty bad hit, the barrier islands saw water higher than the previous benchmark set by the Great Ash Wednesday Nor'Easter of 1962.
But as bad as it was in South Jersey, North Jersey and New York City got hammered harder than us, compared to the damage in Seaside, and other coastal communities between us and New York, we got off easy.
Still cleaning up here, it'll be a long time before we are back to normal, but we're still alive and well in lower Atlantic County.....

went to get gas this morning at 5:00am. Sat in line for 5 hours, until a police officer came driving down the line telling each car that they ran out of gas. Supposedly gas is on the way, I really hope so.

Are you on Long Island? I lived at the Hamlet in Commack for 16 years before relocating permanently to Florida first of July. I'm a getting varied reports from friends in that area. Just learned of alternate day rationing out there. Friend in Dix Hills missed having his house cut in half by one of the trees on his property and another was held aloft and away from his automobile by the fork in the limbs of a tree alongside it.

Well Sandy didn't come up my way, instead we got a 3 day artic storm from the north instead. Flights are cancelled, roads are closed, northern half of the country is covered in up to 6 ft of snow, and everthing on the southern part is covered in leftover ash from the 2010 eruption in Eyjafjallajökull, some people are injured after the wind had simply pushed them over, Fire departments, police and volunter search and rescue forces have been working overtime. Still things are not as bad as on the east coast of America. Major mojo heading your way (might need some warming up when you get it) .

On the bright sight the Icelandic Airwaves music festival wasn't cancelled despite the bad whether in downtown Reykjavík and only one band from New York had cancel for obvious reason.

And some person with wicked humor has been getting some laugh over peoples reaction to this photo:

For those who haven't noticed yet, this photo is photoshopped.

Rockland County, just above Long Island and Manhattan, red in this map

I grew up in Long Island and still have relatives there. I used to live right on the water in Long Beach (one of those big buildings east of the boardwalk), and also lived in Bay Shore. Would have been in trouble with this storm in either case, so glad I ended up moving north.

Thanks for the major mojo, Nonni. I can feel it already, went back out for gas and only waited 1 hour, 10 gallon maximum has been imposed for now. Oh and of course the prices are back up to $4.14/gal since now we have gas??
