It is 5:27am here in the now quiet corner of CT...... :?
I had thought we would remain unscathed but Sandy's landfall arrival came with a resounding right hook.
At about 8:00 pm what was a 90mph gust down in Mystic reached us as a 70mph gust.
It tore down a 25 foot Cherry tree next to the pond and house but more unnerving was the 80+ foot tree that was uprooted just 30 feet from the house. It tore off the power line that runs to our cabin in the rear of the property, has completely cut off the trail access to the pond and cabin.
As this tree came down, the house shook....

In all we have only suffered minor exterior trim damage, I hope that all of our community fared well and that people stayed safe and clearheaded.

I will post pics once daylight allows me to go and assess the damage...

Prayers and well-wishes to everyone affected by this monsterous storm. Hope all the Lounge members in the Tri-State area and along the Eastern Seaboard are doing okay.

A small sample of the aftermath, our little corner saw a 78 mph wind gust, thankfully the 60 year old Sycamore tree out front was not impressed.

Stay safe,

We live in Northern Virginia, not far from Dulles Airport, about 25 miles from Washington, DC. We survived. No loss of power. Just some leakage under the sliding glass door to the deck. Nothing bad. No real bad wind. It blew hard, but I don't think we had 70 mph gusts. Its still raining and blowing lightly, but not as bad as last night. I'm gonna take our Girls (Golden Retrievers) for a stroll around the neighborhood shortly and see what's up. We have a stream three houses away that floods. It has only flooded the road once before. Should be interesting to see what happens today.

We lost power late yesterday. The world is very eerie when it's dark and quiet.
Still no power in Maine and thousands others around here. The cleanup starts today.

Here's a couple of pics of the wind damage from that 90mph super gust around 8:30pm last night after Sandy landfalled....

Far more intense than some assumed.

Best thoughts go out to those impacted whether it was minor property damage or the loss of a relative/friend.

I'm in Rhode Island and we didn't seem to get hit as hard as elsewhere, but lost power and the beaches and wharfs flooded out. Luckily, I live on a hill, so no flooding, but lost power from 2 PM (in fact I was reading this forum when it went) until around 10 or 11 AM. Oddly enough, the power was on in surrounding neighbourhoods, last night, and there is still a couple of blocks are still out, including the house next door and the next block down on one side of the road. I guess it's a block to block basis. When Irene hit, the whole island was out. I feel bad for New York and others who got it worse. I hope they manage to pull through.

I'm certainly remiss in getting my two 'sense' in but I did read carefully all of your posts. Those combined with the reports I'm getting from friends, family , as well as new sources, that around the NYMA one's experience certainly had a lot to do with where you happened to be, and what past experiences guided your actions [unexpected gusts of wind notwithstanding  ] I do not know what happened in the case of my daughter-in-law's sister and her family who live the the Red Zone in East Rockaway NY. Her folks live in East Meadow, NY which a friend of mine who lives there as well reported was doing well. My stepson in Basking Ridge NJ in the face of a power outtage of undetermined length and the school closings advised that he was packing the family into the car and 'heading south', what ever the hell that meant. Whether or not he was asleep through all of this and paying no attention the events taking place along the '95' corridor in the direction he was heading I have no idea. On Thursday I invited them to fly here at once based upon the predicted storm track. He refused. He may just wind up here. Still waiting for my cousin in NJ and one in Rockland Cty, NY to check in.

I have a dear friend in CT [other than our Forum Mate herein] who lives way west of him. The news from that location was reassuring. Been in private contact with Miami Mike all through this. Heard from JDe, whom we don't hear from much anymore. He relocated from Brooklyn to a community on Staten Island which he states was devasted and cited that a mother and her 13 yo daughter in that community were lost. Cause not yet mentioned.

Pleased to learn that Ceri's dad rode the 'crest of the waves' so to speak, and did not 'wipe out'. I hope that the city's crippling will not interfere much with the purpose of his visit. I regret not being there to greet him under better circumstances. Perhaps some day Ceri will bring him south and we can have a grand old reunion to include Serge.

To my Forum Mate in CT, whose well being I am grateful to learn of, in the face of all his well grounded first and second hand experiences which forge his outlook on matters of nature, I extend this word of advice, something which I have lived by for years......"Remember The Titanic!"

Peace be on you and may Providence hold you fast in its protective wings in all things.

Hope everyone here stayed safe. Things can be replaced, even guitars and amps, but not your loved ones.

Be grateful that you only get these type of storms once in a while...spent many years in Florida and this got to be a yearly thing and you kind of get numb to it all and tend to forget all the work you put in before and after one of these with clean up.

Again, hope everyone stayed safe and take a minute to say a prayer for those that did not make it through the storm.

Tony

I too wish everyone in the storms path is safe and sound. Ceri, good news your Dad is where he's supposed to be. This storm is going to cross much of the USA, the news in Chicago has alerted the local surfers to be ready for 7 to 8 foot waves on the Lake Michigan shoreline. It's kind of rare to watch people surfing off of the Chicago beaches but 4 of them are designated surf beaches.

Never got to surf on any of the Great Lakes, but that would be a different experience...

My prayers and best wishes for all of those who caught the worst of this storm.
On a lighter note, I was way off on wave size for Lake Michigan. The Chicago surfers were out in force today, 20 foot waves for them all.
