We are on Long Island. Last year we took off to mid-Pennsylvania for a few days to get away from Irene, but this time Lady Spacewolf declared we should not be such money-wasting wimps...so we are going to stay and ride it out. And this storm is so big there is really nowhere to run. It doesn't look like we will catch the brunt of it, but I expect we will still take a good lashing.

Arc-n-spark, Strings, and everyone else in the way, stay safe! My best wishes to all of you.

Survived so far! Still have 2 dozen Moonpies and half a case of RC Colas left. Not too bad here in NC. Just clouds and a little wind. I think it hit 30 MPH here in Albemarle, NC. However it isn't just Sandy but the other 2 systems it gets in cahoots with north of here. I recommend Moonpies and RC Cola as great hurricane rations! Looks to be heading right for D.C. right now. Shut down the NYSE! Amazing! Can this impact the election?

Hi brotherdave: that's the sort of news I'm looking for right this moment. My dad was arriving at JFK late last night and so far I haven't been able to find out that he got to his hotel safely. I'm not worried about him getting whisked away to Oz by a twister but I'm concerned he might have had a hellish time travelling into town, since what I'm hearing on the media is that your transport systems are shut down. Is that right?

Last time I flew into NY I spent two hours standing in a line for security and another hour waiting in a huge queue for a taxi. And that was on a normal day. My dad's 74 with certain health issues and he ain't up to that kind of treatment.

Anyhow. Good wishes to everyone affected - be safe! And any news as to how things are looking on the ground will be gladly received.

Best of luck, all - C

Just here waiting for Miss Sandy's arrival... beach town here in Marshfield, and just FYI, the local airport is 2 feet above sea level.
I was around for the No-Name storm and I never want to go through that again... but it seems we're in for something similar.
No-Name was actually 3 storm systems that came together. This one's two.
Past couple of "big-hype" events around here turned out to be nothing, and I'm concerned that too many people might think the media is crying wolf again.
Me? I'm not taking any chances. Thoughts and prayers are on "the big desk" for anyone in the path.
Stay safe! and see you when it's over. 8)

Here in Northeast Connecticut (10:30am ) it is light intermittent rainfall , sporadic wind gusts of 25 to 35mph..Generally just like many storms I have been through.

This is what I think of this storm....It is huge, slow moving and widespread which is good, instead of like Irene last year that was compressed and fast moving.
The biggest problems will be for all shorelines since the storm surge will inundate low lying beach front...Or in other words anywhere close to the ocean under 10 feet of elevation will be flooded.
No surprise there, this always happens wether it is a hurricane, a Noreaster or a tropical storm which is really what this is.....

A big powerful tropical storm or a Cat I hurricane, take your pick.
As for the new reporting, I would really appreciate honest real time assessments, not doomsday scenarios' of the perfect storm or Frankenstorm or whatever hype highlighted with ridiculous comments by people who have never lived on an island and experienced many tropical storms, Hurricanes and Noreaster.

Speaking of that if this storm would have arrived 3 weeks from now it would be labeled as a powerful Noreaster..... See the instant distinction.... :?: The parameters would be the same but the description / name gives it a more rational reaction from people.....

I grew up on Block Island ( 14 miles offshore from Rhode Island, 12 miles NE from the tip of Montauk / Long Island ) I surfed ( competitively and for fun ) from 12 years old to mid 40's.
Or in other words I chased after Tropical Storms / Hurricane / Noreaster waves up and down the entire Eastern Seaboard.
My Dad was a certified captain, delivering 40 to 65 foot sailboats from New England to the Bahama's. When the real perfect storm hit, he and his crew were on their way offshore delivering a 65 foot sailboat to the islands, they were in the midst of it heaved to for three days, No crew member was hurt, the boat was delivered undamaged.
They ( parents ) also lived on a 45 foot Choy Lee, sailed to the islands every winter.

I have a healthy respect for the ocean and it's potential, but it is also a no nonsense, no fiction assessment of where or what I am doing during a storm or in preparation for a storm...

To all being safe means don't underestimate the result of gusting winds upwards of 40 to 65 mph.
Everything loose should be tied down or in the garage or in the basement.
For us inland it won't be as critical as for those on the shoreline. It will be messy but if you are rational and cautious then this should not be a life threatening situation....
Have water, non perishable foods, fresh batteries, First Aid kits should be up to date and ready
( actually always ) have all your handhelds and laptops charged and plugged in until power goes out ( if at all )

Regarding my post a few above this, about my dad: I just had such a nice PM from Forum user John.E about it. What good folks there are round here! :D

I've finally located my dad, he got in on the last international flight to JFK and is now safe and sound in a hotel room and watching it on TV like the rest of us.

So all of our thoughts are with the millions of others sitting this thing out - stay safe, everyone! People everywhere have their fingers crossed for you.

Cheers - C

I too wish everyone in the storms path is safe and sound. Ceri, good news your Dad is where he's supposed to be. This storm is going to cross much of the USA, the news in Chicago has alerted the local surfers to be ready for 7 to 8 foot waves on the Lake Michigan shoreline. It's kind of rare to watch people surfing off of the Chicago beaches but 4 of them are designated surf beaches.

Never got to surf on any of the Great Lakes, but that would be a different experience...
