I did that once just out of necessity (broke an E string and only had a B available). From what I remember, it was very hard to bend the string and felt toight- toight like a toiger.

For a fuller tone on the upper frets on the high strings, I buy these:

Note, this set has a wound G string, it takes a little getting used to.

Isn't there a thread right now about why everyone should own an acoustic guitar??? hmmmm, wound G string... who'da-figgered?
I s'pose I lean toward the heavier gauge because I spent many years playing acoustic... I play mostly rhythm guitar. I can pull off a short solo occasionally. If I play two solos on a given event, I have to make sure they're spaced pretty far apart so it's less noticeable how much it sounded just like the last one.
but i do have to respectfully differ with guitslinger... I noticed a big difference in tone going from 10's to 11's.

this is interesting if true, supposedly the only reason electric guitar strings don't have a wound 3rd is because when electric guitars were invented, there were no electric guitar strings, so you'd use an acoustic set with an added light gauge string.

So in other words, you'd use the A as your low E, the D as your A, the G as your D, the B as your G (thus not wound) and the high E as your D. Then you'd add the lighter gauge string as your high E. So that's why the G string is always going out of tune before the others, it should have been wound!
