Hey all,
was just doing my daily round up online tonight and stumbled across this article about a guys opinion on why a guy thinks everyone should own a good acoustic guitar. I thought it was quite cool and that some of you might enjoy it.

I can't tell if I agree or not to be honest, I mean I do own both an acoustic and an electric, and I just don't play the acoustic ever. I can play it, but I just don't.

I enjoy playing electrics and my style of playing fits it, should I expand my technique by playing an acoustic, yes probably, but I just don't enjoy it so....

As always, this is where you put all those acronyms I don't understand about it all being my own opinion or something

I feel that the more acoustic guitar I play the better I am on electric.

Besides, acoustic guitars are beautiful instruments.

I agree, there's something just pure and simple - no cables, no anything, just you and a wooden box. I play mostly electric but fire up the acoustic pretty often. Every instrument has a different sound and feel, you all know what I mean.

I'd agree with the writer on this one. For my situation I have my acoustic out on a stand so it's easy to grab, and I do so daily. With our house as is I don't have a dedicated spot for my guitars so to play the electric I have to get it out of the closet, the case, grab the amp, plug in. Instead I just pick up my acoustic, more convenient.

For me I find it more relaxing as well, simple, clean. Travis picking some Prine is a great way to wind down at night.

I don't know if everybody should have one - but I sure couldn't live without one ! This is my beloved Levin W36 , produced 1975 - I bought it new in -76 , with money borrowed from my Grandma . It's been played at least 95 % of the days since then . Though I have a dozen electrics in different shapes and brands , THIS is the one I would keep if I was forced to pick just one :D

Simple and beaten up ... She's an old lady now , but still rocking. Nowadays I think twice before bringing her to a gig or party - I bought a new some years ago , more rugged for occasions like that. I also own a 12-string acoustic , and a dobro. The necessities of life !

I think owning an Acoustic has been very instrumental in my guitar developmental years. Sure...you could argue that the same could be said about any type of guitar...but playing an Acoustic just takes me away from everything. The "Musical Creaminess" that you get from an Acoustic...in my opinion...is un-touchable!! :D

i have one of my electrics (whichever happens to be out at the time) always plugged into an amp ready to go. hanging on the wall above it are my first guitar, a cheapish fender 6 string acoustic, and my gorgeous Seagull 12 string.

i always feel more drawn to the 12 string. it just feels so .....lustrous. i dont know, its hard to describe. its the only guitar i have that doesnt feel machine made. it probably is, but it doesnt feel like it.

I started off on a no-name acoustic that had the old Black Diamond strings that I'm sure that they sourced from old ship mooring cables plus it had about 3/4" action and a neck like 2X6.When I made the transition to electric my playing took off like wildfire,I was like Forrest Gump shedding his leg braces and was soon playing circles around my buddies who started playing at the same time that I did.I always brought an acoustic on the road with me to play before gigs so that when I picked up my Strats with .008-.038 strings,I could bend the strings almost off the neck and easily bend a note 3 and even 4 tones.

It would behoove every guitar player to have an acoustic around just for this purpose but then again everyone has a time when they are in a pensive mood and an electric guitar just won't cut it-that's where an acoustic comes in.

Acoustic guitars are for playing Kumbya around the campfire.

I agree, everyone should own a decent acoustic guitar. That goes for non musicians as well.

Absolutely agreed. There's nothing better for your playing than being totally exposed and able to hear the slightest difference in your vibrato, picking, etc without flattering pickups, effects or amplification. If you can get something to sound good on an acoustic, then it's going to be the simplest thing in the world to get it sounding great on electric.

I never play better electric than I do after I've not picked one up for a couple of days, and have just been noodling around the house on acoustic.

gotta agree, everyone should have a good acoustic. I went through a few cheaper ones that never played right and sat collecting dust most of the time. Then I picked up a Taylor 314 and it was just a joy to play. Bought it on the spot, pricey, but it's been my favorite guitar since and out of everything I own, it's the last thing I'd give up. I'd sell my car and walk before I got rid of it.

Can't agree more with that article. I'll never understand why any guitar player would keep themselves from owning and playing an acoustic but try to justify why those 5 teles and 7 strats are different guitars. I play my acoustic almost daily, certainly more often than my electrics. And my acoustic is not some fancy Taylor or Martin, its a $300 (with a HSC!) Fender. And she's a joy to play. I can hear every little thing I do wrong with my playing. If I don't fret a string close to the fret wire, she will buzz, I need about twice the hand strength to play a clean barre chord, my finger calluses are thicker, and the sound hole smells great.

If you don own an acoustic, go and sell 3 of your 15 electrics and buy one! You owe it to yourself.
