There was no "online" when I was learning! I had to figure stuff out for myself, no lessons, just a few books from the local library, most of which were useless for rock guitar. Someone even gave me a horrific "Encyclopaedia of Chords for Jazz Guitar" which almost put me off playing for life. My best teacher was a VHS video recorder, I must have worn the playback head flat trying to copy Carl Perkins' fingerpicked version of Waiting For The Sunrise.

How did I learn to play guitar? ....

Well, kinda crazy but I was a big Status Quo fan those days (started '77) and when I finally followed my URGE to learn playing guitar, I bought a cheap El Maya guitar (Les Paul shape, 2 humbuckers), watched Status Quo VHS videos, stopped the tape and looked, where they placed their fingers on the fretboard, ha ha ha.

A little later I looked into books, getting one or two advices, and went on improvising.

I never had even one minute of lessons (which I regret today). Whenever I got stuck, I watched a video or took a quick look into a book, that was it.

It took me about 10 years (early '90s) before I started to actually LEARN and PRACTICE with the help of books and videos every now and then.

I wish I had taken lessons, I could be so much further today! :? :(

I'll let you know once I learn...

So far, mostly internet info and some advice, of course this Forum.

Starting 1-on-1 lessons next week at a small Music School and hope I don't have to start by unlearning any bad habits from the past 3 mos.

cheers!

How about all of the above? The internet helped me greatly when I first started playing (and it still does), I collect books with music lessons in them like they're going out of style, jamming with other musicians is a great way to learn too. But the thing that helped me the most, where books and videos sometimes fell short, is having a real live person in front of you helping you and correcting you in real time. Yes they're pricey, but 100% worth it IMO. I started teaching lessons as a substitute teacher at a guitar store two years ago and now I have about five students of my own. It's really fun to see kids who had never touched a guitar, much less played one a few months before progress to the point where they're playing real songs now and having fun.

Right there. Giving it back can be very rewarding in any kind of situation,
I use to assist my martial arts instructor back in the day. It was very
very cool.
