Growing up, I hated Pink Floyd. But since I have started to learn guitar; and started
to understand the lyrical content of Pink Floyd; I have nothing but respect for that band musically. I love their spacey sound!

Growing up, I guess I liked the high testosterone heavy music. With age, my tastes have varied and I have respect for other forms of music.

How about you guys?

What bands did you not appreciate growing up---But have great respect for now?

You aren't alone. I liked Dark Side of the Moon but I had no knowledge of what came before it and little appreciation for their subsequent work including The Wall. Now I wonder what was wrong with me. I love Gilmour's guitar work and the music is just fantastic.

At the risk of drawing the ire of Dead Heads, I confess I do not understand the mad attraction with the Grateful Dead or how they managed to create such a large and diverse fanbase. I didn't get them back in the day, I don't get them now. :?

Rockstar! I feel the same way you do about the Grateful Dead...I do have respect for them. I know when they did play, they always played different variations of the song every time they played it. They are and will always be a great jam band with talented musicians. I just was not into the Dead scene.

Bands came and went and I Liked bands that I no longer care to listen to and I listen to bands that I never use to listen to before, the only constant in all my years of listening is Dylan and it's never been about his voice.

I can't listen the songs of Bruce Springsteen. But I really have respect to him.

For a long time I didn't like the Beatles. I hated like their smarmy pop love songs from the early 60's and didn't "dig" the psychedelic stuff they were putting out later in the decade. Being a Blues guy, I leaned more towards the Stones and their Bluesy stuff.
At some point while experimenting with recreational mood enhancers in my late teens I "saw the light" regarding the Beatles' later recordings and as time went on I also began to appreciate the songwriting genius behind the early teeny bopper stuff. 8)

I'm probably the only one who will answer with this band.... Hanson.
yep. i said it. okay, so my wife was always a huge hanson fan when she was younger and i of course made fun of her plenty....until she popped in a dvd of a concert they played a few years ago (now in their 20s) and i heard a few catchy tunes and then some crosby stills nash and young covers.... i was kind of blown away. then a couple of years later i surprised her with tickets to see them and went with her. one of the best live shows i've seen. and man, Isaac rocks out with those guitars.... they're really talented guys and i respect them a ton for never changing who they are. no lies, watch this :

None. Musically, every band I despised then, I still do now.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

+1!

And the post-Peter Green incarnation of Fleetwood Mac continues to lead the pac, with the "jive talkin" Gibb Brothers solidly in second place.

I'm usually pretty set in the way I think.

If I have a reason to despise a band, it's probably a pretty good one (at least, I think so ;) )

Perfect example for me: Green Day

There are not enough words in my vocabulary to explain everything I hate about Green Day!!! Lol... that opinion has stayed the same since I was quite young.

I didn't like Rush, but I appreciate them now and am even listening to their old stuff from the '70s. Always thought 'Fly By Night' was a great song and didn't understand why they didn't write more like that.

Still don't like the Grateful Dead.

Hay Solid, thanks for the welcome and I can enjoy a good love song also. Just reviewing the list of bands that people have mentioned brings back good memories and I think I will have to dig some up and listen to them again. Oh, I cant forget Bob Seger who is an all time great and John Fogerty who has his career rolling along again, I was at his concert last month and I am glad I went, a great concert and a strong performance .

I know this is going to sound like sacrilege to some, but for me, I originally didn't care too much for the Allman Brothers back in the day.

Back then, I was like, "Come on guys, finish the damn song already!. You all have been jamming on 'Memory of Elizabeth Reed' for like 35 minutes straight!". The Allman Brothers would always go off on wild tangents and Lord only knows which the direction of the song would go.

But nowadays, I look at them with tremendous respect (especially Duane Allman!) because they would play blues, rock, jazz, and a little of everything blended together. They had total freedom to do whatever they wanted, and like the Grateful Dead, they never played the same song twice.

Speaking of the Grateful Dead... I don't get them. Never have. I never understood the whole Deadhead scene.

Same here Butch!!!!
I have great respect for the Allman brothers now more than ever. Like yourself, I thought they went on tangents too....I thought it was one up-man-ship male ego on the guitar sort of tangent too. (I was wrong) They were very talented induviduals.

By the way . . . I live in Georgia and two years ago, I happened to be in Macon Georgia where I passed the cemetary where Duane Allman is buried.

And I am with you on The Grateful Dead too. I think they were great musicians in every way, but I never understood the cult following. But to eachs own. I still respect it.

Speaking of the Grateful Dead... I don't get them. Never have. I never understood the whole Deadhead scene.
