It is much easier for me to think of bands I liked as a kid and don't like as much for now rather than the other way around.

As a teen I thought Led Zeppelin walked on water. Nowadays there's only a few songs of theirs that I like. I actually appreciate Bonham and Jones more, these days, than Page and Plant.

This might make some of you throw stuff at your computer but I think the Doors are far better during instrumental interludes rather than when Morrison is singing.

I like Nugent more for his politics than his guitar playing. As a kid it was the other way around.

With respect to the Beatles, as a teen I was more into their late 60's psychedelic stuff. Now I am more into their early 60's "pop combo" stuff.

In response to the previous.....I have to say I do have respect for the Bee Gees & ABBA.
Also . . . I have more respect for the Beatles more than I ever did growing up as a teenager.

Growing up, I hated Pink Floyd. But since I have started to learn guitar; and started
to understand the lyrical content of Pink Floyd; I have nothing but respect for that band musically. I love their spacey sound!

Growing up, I guess I liked the high testosterone heavy music. With age, my tastes have varied and I have respect for other forms of music.

How about you guys?

What bands did you not appreciate growing up---But have great respect for now?

You aren't alone. I liked Dark Side of the Moon but I had no knowledge of what came before it and little appreciation for their subsequent work including The Wall. Now I wonder what was wrong with me. I love Gilmour's guitar work and the music is just fantastic.

At the risk of drawing the ire of Dead Heads, I confess I do not understand the mad attraction with the Grateful Dead or how they managed to create such a large and diverse fanbase. I didn't get them back in the day, I don't get them now. :?

I really liked the BGs in the 60s, but later they did morph into the chipmunks. I've been ashamed since I've been on this forum that I've never really liked Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and other 70s bands. I have grown to appreciate The Who in the last few years. And punk? rock. Seems like basic r&r to me. The Clash, Ramones, etc. Green Day has some great melodies. " It's all rock and roll to me." :D

LOL!!
I have a friend. He says the same thing of KIϟϟ that he says of Brian Adams, which is:
"I wouldn't open my curtains if he was playing on my front lawn."

Actually, I quite liked KIϟϟ when they first came out but came to dislike them in later years. This would be a perfect example for that other thread.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Another case of not much caring for the Beatles back in the 60s. They were too pop (I was a Stones type) and one of the few rock groups my parents and the other adults could tolerate. I'd always have to knock out a couple Beatles melodies at family gatherings (along with something "safe" like Greensleeves and a hymn or two). I didn't appreciate why their tunes were popular back then or that they were great song writers.

I was all into hard rock/metal shred type stuff when I got into guitar. I actually really didn't like blues until I saw SRV and realized that I was essentially a hypocrite if I liked Cream/Hendrix but not blues. So things ended up flipping around and now a lot of the shred stuff I used to be fascinated by, I'm sort of bored with now. But in general, I think that I've gotten a lot more open minded about music in the last few years. I like a much broader range of things than before.

The closest I've come to being disrespectful to an artist is when I and a few of my friends walked out of a Golden Earring concert about 15 minutes into their opening song, radar love. In retrospect I think that it was frustration because the opening band cancelled, Lynyrd Skynyrd their lead singer had a sore throat. GE were just a little pretentious. IMHO YMMV to quote my favorite Martian :D

Golden Earring - Radar Love (1973)

( A belated apology to Golden Earring, youthful impulsivity fueled by a thirsty Oxford pub crawl before the concert and not your bands excellent performance is what prompted our early departure.)

I'm almost embarrassed by it now, but I used to hate the White Stripes. I just thought every song was one riff played ad nauseum with Meg over smashing cymbals behind it.

A few months ago, I watched SNL and saw Jack White play a couple songs off of his new solo disc, so I downloaded the cd.

I can't get enough of the whole Blunderbuss cd, so I watched a concert online where they did some old White Stripes songs with his new bands. I was blown away. Now I've gone back and listened to all of their old stuff, and am mad at myself for not giving them more of a chance.

Not only that, but now I am discovering everything that Jack White has done in all of his bands. What a Genius!

I never really liked Smashing Pumpkins until recently, but they're starting to grow on me. In spite of Billy Corgan's song writing and personality, that is.

Gee, someone doesn't like KISS? Shocked

I grew up on KISS and the Rolling Stones and didn't have much time for anything else but have since come to appreciate lots of things I would have never listened to at say, 17 yrs old.

Now I'd be happy to say I'm still a huge KISS and Stones fan, but John Prine and Robert Earl Keen are up in the top 10 as well.

Time and experience playing have opened my eyes and ears over the years. Maturity? God I hope not.

Peter Frampton...mostly because you couldn't seem to get away from that fricking album, it was everywhere it seemed! But having not heard it for so long, I heard a couple songs one day and thought that was actually pretty good guitar playing, good song structure...not bad!

kind of reminds me of an interesting story........

i saw led zeppelin on their '77 tour. it was a different type of concert than i was used to- you know, pretty much most bands were playing their songs true to the record. zep stretched out a bit, playing some jams in between. when i left, i wished they did less jams and more songs.

looking back at concert videos from that time, i am really digging what they did. i can hear the cd's anytime, but can't re-create the vibes of the concert. i felt the same way when i saw furthur this summer. what a great show

on the plus side, my son's friends can't believe i got to see zepp
