What bands did you not appreciate---But have great respect for now?

Growing up, I hated Pink Floyd. But since I have started to learn guitar; and started
to understand the lyrical content of Pink Floyd; I have nothing but respect for that band musically. I love their spacey sound!

Growing up, I guess I liked the high testosterone heavy music. With age, my tastes have varied and I have respect for other forms of music.

How about you guys?

What bands did you not appreciate growing up---But have great respect for now?

early on i was not a big fan of "the band" the songs did nothing for me then. probably about 15 years ago i stated to listen again, and discovered how wrong i was.

time changes your taste in music to a degree. i still love the beatles, stones, 60's brit/us rock, but can't listen too much to the whole folk music protest stuff.

omg, i am starting to sound like my dad  better sign off......

Hi PB. Like you, I didn't like too much folk music and the corny R&R in "the lull." So when the English invasion hit I was stoked. All I have really liked is British blues. Good on ya. :D

As a Canadian this is going to sound like treason but RUSH was a band it took me years to appreciate. Probably becuase I`m old enough that I was listening to the same stuff they were when they were growing up, and I thought they were a bland copy of those artists. Took me many years to adjust the sound of Geddy`s voice also. But they persisted and their recordings have gotten way better in the ensuing years. I remember them doing covers and actully played a few early festivals with them on the same bill so I may be a little biased. But I am glad they finally got a nod for the Hall of Shame even if I think they don`t care....they are a great working unit who have always shown up and played their hearts out.

In my younger days the Bee Gees stood for everything we cordially hated, from the disco beats right down to the big hairdos, hairy chests and gold medallions.

Then a decade or two ago there came an unexpected moment where I heard one of their '70s numbers and found myself thinking; wow, that harmony really is very good... And the structure of the number is clever too... And the production is pretty classy... He-e-e-elp! What's happened to me?

I doubt I will ever find myself putting on Bee Gees tracks of my own free will, but at any rate I do nowadays have a goodly dose of respect for their talents, when they cross my path.

Cheers - C

For me it was The Beatles, (I know! what a putz huh!?!)

I had no use for these guys or any of the music when I was much younger.

About 20 yeas ago, I realized what a dope I was being.

I have the utmost admiration for them today.

None. Musically, every band I despised then, I still do now.

As always, this is merely IMO where YMMV.

As a kid I in the 90's I used to hate every band that had a Saxophone player in it (so basicly every other band in Iceland in the early 90's), still not a big fan of that instrument the 90's kind of ruined for me. But later in my teens I hated Rock music, everything with a guitar  . All I listened to was hip-hop  , then nu-metal happened and through that trash  , I started to love the sound of guitar and started to explore more classic rock and other genres of Rock and Metal. 8)

The Scorpions..I heard Rock you like a Hurricane and thought it was a cliche bubble gum rock song..recently I have been educated inregards to the Uli years..and I am ashamed I never gave them the time of day..I guess thats one of the great things about Music there is not one day that something new doesnt cross your path!

The only band I can think of that I did not like initially but later came to love was Led Zeppelin. As a young teenager I didn't appreciate their sound or cadence. I thought of it as music for people who dropped acid. It was only when I turned 20 or so and I listened to In Through The Out Door with a friend (and at his insistence) that I began to like them.

The other way around seems more common. There have been several bands over the years that I initially liked and later came to shun them or ridicule them.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

How about the other way around? As an old folkie, I couldn't NOT love Bob Dylan. I mean he is responsible for so many great tunes. It's just that now, I find his voice a bit irritating, (sorry Bob), and prefer to hear his songs done by others. (Of which there are many!)

My musical tastes are always in flux. I could like a song in the morning, then not be in the mood for it by the afternoon!

We are lucky that we have so much to choose from.

Peace,
Gridlok

ABBA. Not just the layered tight harmonies. When you read what they were up against in their native country. A leftist government that was very anti-pop, its remarkable what they achieved. Writing hit lyrics in a tounge not native to them. I have great respect for them as artists.

I think your brother pretty much hit the nail on the head. I believe they made wide use of very tight underwear and helium... :D
