Earlier today I stopped in the music store and decided to doodle around on a Telecaster (Fender American Special model - - I think it's what used to be the Highway One series). Incredible guitar! Sort of "old school" with 3 bridge saddles and stuff like that, but it played perfectly and stayed exactly in tune all the way up the neck.

I found myself goofing around on old rockabilly versions of "Mystery Train" and "Honey Don't" out of a clean Marshall (something...something) small combo amp that was handy and right nearby.

I will NEVER EVER part with my '95 Fender Strat, but for some reason, I really got into the sound of this Telecaster. It had more clean twang than my Strat and just seemed really cool to play.

Lastly, can a person own both a Strat and a Tele? I mean, I love Strats and love the sound and versatility of the Fender Strat. But the Tele has a tone that the Strat can't quite do. What do you think?

Butch...of course you can own both  I gigged pretty steady while stationed in Florida with a Strat and an Esquire. I still have both, and used the Esquire for certain songs...some just sound better with it.

Buy one and enjoy it.

Carefull, Butch. The Tele can be very seductive. It can worm its way into your heart and have you totally neglecting your Strat. The Tele isn't for everyone but if you find it tugging on you then you just might be one of those "special people" and then you'll wake up one morning in a caravan of Airstreams with Tele logos painted all over 'em. It's a cult, bro. One thing you can never say is that nobody warned you. Make sure you send us a postcard or two when you and your fellow cult members make the annual pilgrimage to Fullerton to burn the sacrificial BROADKASTER drumset.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

I have 4 strats (american special, deluxe players, classic player 50s and a mex standard) but i am a Tele man at heart currently with 19 they are a mixture of us, mex, korean, japanese, chinese, most have three way switches, a couple of four way switches, a five way switch, two pups, three pups, single coils, humbuckers, s1 switches they are totally addictive, careful Butch you will get hooked on Tele's and then you in trouble!!!!!

At the very least every guitarist should have at least one Strat and one Tele in his/her arsenal-plus an SG and Les Paul for good measure.I have Strats,a Tele,a Jaguar and a Mustang making up a good representation of Fender's guitars and even though each is unmistakably Fender in tone they all have their own signature sound.I hope to acquire a Jazzmaster,Coronado,Fender XII and vintage Starcaster someday down the road as I'm a confirmed Fenderphile and I'm just addicted to the sounds of all Fender guitars.

LOL... Thanks, guys!

I was just wondering about it. I mean, I absolutely LOVE my '95 Strat and love everything it can do. But for some reason, the Tele just had a certain sound that really hit me.

I just hope I didn't come down with G.A.S. or that I'll wake up in the middle of the night thinking about that sunburst/maple neck American Special Telecaster. I don't want my Strat to get jealous and start hating me! :P

Was just playing my Telecaster last night... My Strat was hanging on the wall... lookin' at me... I think it gave me the "evil eye".
Just an FYI... Page used a telecaster when Led Zeppelin II was recorded. Just couldn't get the right sound out of the LP in the studio.

I love the maple necks too. Both of my Fenders have them.

Welcome to the cult!

I'm guessing the Texas Special pups caught your ear and the modern "C" shaped neck would not let go.

Pepto anyone :?:

Now, I will sooner cut my arm off then say there's a guitar that can do something my Deluxe Strat can't do just as good/better, but there are DEFINITE reasons to own a Tele, just like there are DEFINITE reasons to own a 335, a Les Paul, an SG, and a Gretsch.
I plan on getting a natural Tele and painting it (Jimmy Page wannabe much 8) ?). Get one dude! Then post pics!

I have a Telecaster and a Stratocaster and nothing bad has happened to me, other than some confusion on which to pick up. Of course I also have a custom built Les Paul so perhaps I should go into hiding or something,.....

Every Fender enthusiast should own a strat and tele. Just like every Ford guy should own a mustang and a F150. Two iconic guitars capable of different tones that sets them apart. I can't even believe you're asking such a question!

I like my Tele - simple, plain design - but sounds great.
