Well over the weekend I finished prep sanding and primed. Than sanded some spots and primed again, than repeated a couple times to get it all baby butt smooth (if that's a correct term!)

I also traced the body on a sheet of plywood and my son is gonna use that for practicing the final color design. The white graphic (right now) will be a sort of heartbeat EKG line that will divide the body in 3 sections at an angle black/candy apple red/black again. the sections are at an angle so the top horn will end up being red and the bottom one black, make sense.

My son/Jordan was finishing a tribal son design on another guy's Sunburst Strat over the weekend too so that took him some time. That has been clear coated /buffed and should be ready to install when I get home. Now he can concentrate on my guitar!

Hit a snag in my project. My son has done some great work on a couple pickguards but now we're working on the body right?

His airbrush paints are just not looking right at all, very thin and unappealing looking. I got some 1x12 boards that I sanded and primed for practice, before he started on the body that is now primed/sanded and ready to go.

The colors look like crap, wonder if it needs to be painted a base color before he starts to airbrush? More research, I'm itching to see this all shiny and done but another snag! I spent about 10 hours sanding that body and than primed/sanded a couple times too so I don't want to see any paint hit that until we're sure it's gonna look good ya know.

How's your work progressing?

Hi KISSfan: photos, please. And what sort of primer did you use and what sort of paint is your son putting through his airbrush?

Cheers - C

I used a rustoleum "premium" grade sandable primer/sealer.

So my son and I were putting our heads together today and put some flat white in the area that will be covered by the pickguard, than put some airbrush paint on that and it looked a little better. Tomorrow we're gonna mix some black into the red to give the red more "depth", it looked pink before. It's just standar Acrylic enamel standard airbrush paint. Looked great on the pickguards, I guess we just need to find the balance/mix on the wood and primer.

My bride is with my daughter and her dance team with the camera right now so can't show you this body, photos still on mem card. But here are the pickguards that he's done.

So a little progress today with the paints but a ways to go. The paint went on so nice on the pickguards that that's what got us thinking about painting a base coat before airbrushing.

I can post some photos later, gonna keep going with our plan of attack for now.

Howdy Snowjoe!

Cool thread! 8)

Hehehe!

Need to start thinking about wiring, I think I want to keep it simple for sure, going single coils. I'm looking at the custom shop 69 pickups, as they are close to the era of the strat John Fruciante uses, and as my idol somewhat that is the sort of sound I'm looking for. But there are so many options its baffling

I had a set of C69's that came stock with my CP60's (before I traded it in) and they are as spanky as Strat pups get, very percussive and bright. The Fruciante feel for sure! If your on the fence regarding buying a set, why not pop down to your local shop and try a Classic Player 60's Strat.

If you have the cash, I very much doubt a set of Bareknuckle Mother Milk pups would disappoint. As you can tell by the name they're made with John Fruciante in mind.

But the questions are, the difference in pot resistance, 250 or 500, I get how to wire everything together and coming from a hi-fi and home install background I'm a solid hand at wiring, but I'm not sure I understand fully what the difference between the two is. Also I imagine there is a way to wire the neck and bridge pickup to the same pot? So that with the 5 way switch you can effectively control every pickup combo with 2 tone knobs. There much be such a thing as a double pot? There are so many different types of electronics at different prices, its baffling, but I'm looking forward to this challenge!

If it Ok with you I'll spare you my poor explanation as to why you should use 250k pots with single coils and 500k with humbuckers as I'll more than likely get it wrong! General rule is (as I just mentioned) 250k for singles 500k for humbuckers

Maybe I'll find some fancy type of tone control that I fancy trying, I just love all the options

If its options your after maybe a push/pull pot to get two extra pickup combos (neck & bridge and neck, middle & bridge) or some Big Hairy S-1 switching?

Keep us posted!

Andy

Hi Mr Bighair, thanks for your response. I'll certainly be looking into those pickups you have suggested. Unfortunately my budget has taken a big of a hit recently for various reasons and work around Christmas is mad, so seems that this may take a bit of a back seat for a little while! The plus side of being hourly paid is after Christmas I should be fairly flush and the work should quiet down so plenty of time to crack on with it.

Plus the colour ideas may change, this is tricky

KISSfan some cool pickguards there indeed! Keep us up to date on how your painting is going!

tricky is more satisfying when you pull it off though.

Having some luck in my painting project now. Used "Dupli-color Metal Flake", sort of an orange/rust color, have the front and back painted and now Jr will be using his airbrush to put a black sunburst around it. Coming along, getting itchy to put this thing together! How's it going Snowjoe?

I've got to put on some pics, just haven't done it. Took plenty though from start to sanding, to primer and now paint. I skipped a few "bad" paint schemes in the process.
