I don't do drugs, don't have tattoos, and live a pretty boring everyday life. Guitars and amps and playing are an outlet that I've enjoyed for well over 20 years. But try telling this to someone who doesn't play-just mentioning having a small collection of guitars and amps alone get you weird looks-or instant requests to play on demand.

I wouldn't call these 'stereotypes', but two things I dislike:

1. Commercials or shows on TV that have people 'playing' guitar that obviously have never held one in their life.

2. If you have a guitar out, then whoever sees it automatically feels the need to play it-and odds are they'll put a ding in it rather than playing anything recognizable.

I grew up in southern California...a surf bum if you will (and most of the stereotypes that came with it). Throw guitar player on top of that along with a dash of hippie liberal (as my co-workers have labeled me) and voila! It's Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. On top of that I live in a city that The Simpsons referred to in one episode as Hitler City, NC.

I will continue to post Kurt Vonnegut quotes at my cube, rail on people that print unnecessary papers all day long, proudly display a picture of my 3-year old hugging a tree, and talk about how much better it is to play a real guitar than to master "Guitar Hero" or "Rockband"!

Long live real instrument players across the globe! 8)

Ya Man!
Now if I see it and like and it sounds good I just say ring it up then find
out how much! I bust my $$$ alot of years to be able to do that and still do. Drives my wife crazy but she's made 25 years so far without leaving.

I think the most annoying stereotype is that when you tell an elderly person who worships George Jones that you want to be a guitar player in a band then they all of a sudden think that he's gonna be on drugs, or be a drunk, or just be a plain out loser. (no offense to all of those George Jones fans -if there are any)

Or that you'll go down to the Liquor store on a riding lawnmower, when they take your car keys away...

When people find out i play guitar they just kinda look at me and tell me that they think we should jam, out of the many times this happens, only a few times have I met someone that actually can play like they said they could.

I usually just tell them that I am not really that good or I'm not as good as I should be for the number of years I have been playing. At least that way, if I do end up sounding like crap, it doesn't come as a suprise.

The most difficult thing is finding others that actually know the same tunes as you do or are willing to compromise at all on their style so you can arrive at some common ground.

Would you let someone have their way with your girlfriend? Depends who it is I guess.
