Yes, a can of worms was opened here. I would advise all users to NOT start threads on this forum about religious topics unless you want to know the religious opinions of everyone here.

Tell me about yours. I play most of the lead guitar plus rhythm in our 2 contemporary services on Sundays. We have an acoustic drum kit with plexi shield, keys, a guy who plays a Tele through a Hot Rod Deluxe, a guy who plays a Fender jazz bass, a guy who plays a Martin, 2 girl singers and me who plays a Am Dx Strat through a Blues Deluxe. It's an awesome experience.

Is the leader's name Aaron??? 8) 8) 8)

The question was "Are you in a religious band?" I started this thread to talk to others about their experiences in church bands. I didn't ask for those people not in church bands to talk about their view of God.

Then why not simply ask, "Are you in a band?" How are anybody's experiences playing in a so-called "praise" band any different than anyone's experience in ANY band, save for the Christian clubbiness?

Excellent point GJ. A band is a band the only difference is after the gig one group goes for punch and cookies and the other for beer and pretzels. :P

Why is it everyone seems to like to jump on Christians? As for GJ's comment- there are plenty of threads about "Rock" and "Blues" and"Metal" types of music and bands. But someone starts a thread asking who is in a praise band -obviously because he is and is looking for those with similar interests- and it's "clubbiness"?? My advice is- if this ain't your thing, then why are you posting in this thread? I guess I'm glad I don't live near a Colliseum...

Let's not be naiv, there are tons of differences. The purpose in playing is different, the "audience" is different, the band configuration, song style, PA's and instrumentation are often different... the list could literally go on for a page or two. I've played in lots of rock bands, and it's plenty different.

It's makes perfect sense to differentiate between church bands and other bands, just like it would make perfect sense to ask if anybody plays in a jazz band or a metal band or a punk band or an orchestra or a theater pit band.

Now I'll answer the OP and hopefully get the thread back on track. I played in a church band for about 10 years. The band consisted of the keyboardist, 4 or 5 singers, a percussionist, an acoustic guitarist, and me. I played guitar and bass. Every now and then we had a drummer play a full kit but unfortunately not regularly.

Since there were some who were less fond of mdern church music than others, I decided to play only through my amp rather than into the PA like many do. That way I figured if some people didn't like lectric guitar, they could sit on the other side of the sanctuary and hear less of me.

Rather than haul in a bass rig and a guitar rig every week, I scrounged up a spare PA head that the church had and brought in a big ol' 4x12 I wasn't using and just left it there 24/7. The PA head had the added advantage of having separate channels with independent vol/tone controls, so I could keep the guitar plugged into one channel and the bass plugged into another. That way when I switched instruments, I could just turn the instrument volume down and switch, rather than unplugging one and plugging in another.

Although playing bass into a guitar cab is generally not a good idea, our volume level was low enough that I got away with it with no problems.

I played just about all my guitars there at one point, even a white Epiphone Flying V I used to have. I kept myself positioned so that I was partially obscured behind the pipe organ console (not in use during the contemporary service) so it was difficult to see much of me from most of the seating.

Here's a pic of my rig on one random Sunday, I used different guitars weekly:

I haven't played in church for a couple years due to switching churches after some unpleasant church politics involving the selection of a new pastor, but am hoping to get back playing somewhere else in the future. I miss it.

I hope you find a good church again. God can really draw people to him through music and its an excellent way to worship. Our band is pretty tight and we work hard to get all the tunes dialed in. I really love it. Our bassist plays through the PA but both us guitarist mike our amps.

Thanks. One of the churches I'm going to now actually has a need for a lead player, and I know I could handle their material unless they wanted a note-for-note replication of recordings (at my prior church I pretty much was given free rein to do anything I wanted with songs, my Music Director knew I generally hadn't heard new songs on the radio) but I'm wondering if it would be presumptious for a non-member to answer their call for volunteers. We're kind going back and forth between 2 different churches and are a bit gunshy about joining anything officially.

No, I don't. Music is a complete expression of everything that is beautiful and mysterious about human life, so for me (a man who doesn't believe that there's an all-powerful "God" that invented us and now expects something from us) ALL music is sacred. As Aldous Huxley said, "Next to silence, music comes closest to expressing the inexpressible."

Oh thats what you meant.
