Yes, metro Chicago bass player at a Roman Catholic contemporary ensemble usually 5PM Saturday Mass and somtimes others.

Most fun is when it's piano, mic'ed acoustic guitar, bass, flute, trumpet, about 10 vocalists in 3 parts.

Either Fender Fretless Jazz Bass, L6 VB700 or Ibanez lawsuit Thunderbird IV through a Line 6 LD150. 92 Masses to date in about a year and a half.

Thank you for querying and sharing

I've played guitar in several churches of various denominations over the past 20 years. But not for a while now.

One of the funniest things was seeing the horrified look on a Southern Baptist music director's face the first time I brought in my Strat and a tiny 5 watt amp. You would have thought that I had dragged in a wall of Marshall stacks! I explained to him that it did have a volume control and he admitted that it sounded pretty good once we got started. I ended up playing an Epiphone Sheraton most of the time though because it looked more like a "church guitar" I think the Strat looked a little rock and roll for his comfort. lol.

But I generally don't care much for "contemporary" (what does that mean?) Christian musyic. But I do like Cross Movement, L'il Raskull, Ed Raetzloff, and Bryn Haworth.

You asked earlier why 20 singers when only 5 sing. When you have three services every Sunday, and a Wednesday night service, those 5 singers will get pretty burnt out if they are up every service. With 25-30 singers, we rotate everyone so people can get a rest between the times they serve. It works the same way with the musicians; everyone should get a break now and then. Contemporary Christian music refers to music that is more "modern" or "with the time" as opposed to traditional music which is more like your Hymns. It's a label that appears to have stuck, so if it isn't "traditional" it's "contemporary".

And that's why it probably wouldn't be as big an issue for you and your folks-but trust me, even though you love to play- and I love to play- you can get burnt out a bit. It's important that you take a break every now and again to keep your love for music and for serving fresh. I think it's great that young folks love to play for the Lord. I know our youth team blesses mu socks off every time the play. Keep "rawkin" FenderStrat.

For a long time I lead the band at a Messianic congregations. As such, a lot of our music had a Jewish feel to it, but we also played a lot of the contemporary Christian stuff and even some old hymns that we updated.

Originally, I just played acoustic guitar. We also had a bass player, a fiddle player and a conga guy. Later we got some winds and horns for a time, but they didn't last. Evenutally we got a drummer and another acoustic player. I started playing more electric guitar then. I used a GT2 SansAmp pedal rather than an amp. It worked great.
