Hi. I play bass at/for Saddleback Church Worship Services at various venues in Southern California (Lake Forest, Irvine & San Clemente). I believe it's a great opportunity for using your time, gifts & talents in service to others. In fact, the most professional and competent musicians and sound techs I've ever worked with have been in Praise settings. So much of traditional American Music was built from Church perormances, I'm happy to be participating and meeting other musicians.

I play guitar, mostly acoustic plugged in, in a Church Praise team group in Maryland. I sometime have to cover drums and bass as well.

We have a keyboardist, bass player, guitarist (me), drummer, and singer. We all sing as well. We also regularly do solo numbers and have guest performers from other congregations or friends or other of our congregation members.

I am also on the Church Council as is the singer who is also an assisting minister. We are a;; in our early fifties.

I love it and have been doing it for the last eight months or so. We occasionally play at other local Lutheran Churches or their events. The group is called "Godsong" We practice every Sunday before the 5pm service we play at.

I find it interesting, and very refreshing, that this topic is allowed here.

It speaks volumes of very good things for those running the site.

To answer the original posters query "Are you in a church band?";

I was years ago. The vocals were, as you would expect, the "lead". They had an acoustic piano as the main lead instrument, with an electric (strat) guitar as an alternate/fill in lead. The rhythm was an acoustic drum set, a Fender Precision Bass and me trying to play rhythm guitar on a Strat. They covered my mistakes really well.

The guitar, bass and amp lineup looked like a commercial for Fender. :D

The music was mostly the traditional hymns, with a sprinkling of the earliest, oldest contemporary "Christian" music. Petra was even too new and modern for that church. (probably still is)

Anyway - that was years ago - in the past. It was fun and some good memories.

It doesn't matter where that was, because, as I said - it's past.

It's nice to read about the young people getting into playing in church at such a young age. WELL DONE!

I think letting the young folks have a bit of ownership in the service can be really key to a church's success. Playing in the band is one of the easiest ways to do this. At my GF's church, the Sunday evening Mass is pretty much run by the teens. They play the music, take the offering, act as ushers, assist in the Communion, etc. It's great to see how doing all that helps to give them a stake in the church.

I know when I was a teen playing guitar in the occational "youth-led" service was really good for me.

I agree. A lot of curches without involved youth tend to stagnate eventually.

Yitty, I agree, as i said all of us on the Praise team are in our fifities. I'm on our Church Council and we a really struggling to get young people at Church let alone invloved in anything. No younger musicians that I am aware of.

We went to Saddleback back during the tent years, (live a stone's throw from the church), never played there though. Haven't been there in a long time, is Rick Muchow still the leader?

I play acoustic in a Wednesday night band at Calvary Chapel, Rancho Santa Margarita. We practice every Thursday night and play about once per month to six weeks.

I've played in various Church bands since I was 14. Back then I could barely play an F chord and I have no idea how I played some of the stuff I did. It really helped me out with rhythm playing. Currently I'm in the teen praise band in my Church. We don't play the services but we do play at youth group afterwards and we do some off campus concerts too.
