I have a problem, when I sing I have to keep clearing my throat, i was wondering if anyone else has this problem and if there is anything that can be done to help, its not that I'm a great singer or anything I just like to sit and play and sing in my little room, even my cat dosen't like my singing he used to sit on my guitar case and listen to me but the last time he did a funny meow and walked out of the room.

I don't sing often, but drink lots of water before. Also, the air is getting colder and drier this time of year. It could be the lack of humidity.

But I was singing House Of Broken Love on my walk last night just fine.

I agree with Buxom, the lack of humidity makes the air drier. I also think the lack of sunlight makes the night darker.

Water is always good but I think it might also be good to know why you have to clear your throat. Is there a buildup of phlem? Or is it more of an itchy thing? Is it a condition or illness? Are there physical triggers other than singing?

In my band, singer was drinking hot ginseng before a gig & recording. She said that it's making her throat cleaner.

In fact it didn't changed a much I think. She always had a bad voice

Do/did you smoke? Have you had a full physical exam lately. It's not a normal thing
to have to keep clearing your throat whether singing or just talking. Flu season is here
along with many other things that could be causing this. Good luck on curing the cause
and the symptoms.

OK, then discontinue drinking water. Not completely of course, just when you're singing, and replace it with orange juice or other citric acid juice. Cold citrus juice will temporarily strip phlegm from your throat. Discontinue eating bananas if you are doing so as they aid phlegm production. Garlic, celery and onions are foods that can reduce your body's production of phlegm.

Don't forget that phlegm is your body's way of reacting to something. Could be a bug or a condition or illness so you may also want to find out if there is something the matter with you. In the meantime try the juice and stinky foods and see if that helps. Report back to us if you can.

I guess everyone has an answer here,

Cold water is going to tighten your muscles and vocal chords, which is gonna give you other problems, water at room temp is probably best.

OK I don't have an actual informed opinion of my own, but my wife is a vocal instructor (who you would normally pay big bucks to get lessons) and she has told me pretty much word for word what BMW-KTM has stated here.

I learned about that stuff more than 35 years ago when I was still in highschool. There's more too but it won't come to me unless I need it. I sang in the Stage Choir and the Jazz Choir but not the Concert Choir because I didn't actually take music as any of my classes. I was more into shop classes. I sang after school because I loved it. The coaches would give us these little golden nuggets of info from time to time. Actually, to tell you the truth I'm surprised I was able to recall it now that I'm getting so long in the tooth. Oh, I do remember another one. If your throat is dry and itchy and that's why you're coughing you should drink milk, asumming of course you are not lactose intolerant.

Alergies can also cause that, such as the ones I've got.

This is a good point about allergies, if there's ever any doubt about the cause, and you want to take singing seriously, make an appointment with an ENT doctor and they will tell you exactly what's going on.
