Ok... here's my first foray into the world of polls. What "look" do you prefer on a guitar? Something as shiny and clean as the day it left the factory? One of the "factory relic" finishes? Or a truly gigged out look... scratches scuffs and dings from REALLY being played hard?

Not many responses, but it's cool to see that the majority of you out there like that your gear shows some "battle scars".

I'm a former biker (unfortunately not anymore due to a medical condition) and it always boggled my mind to see the vast majority of bikers paranoid about every little spot on their rolling paint jobs. For me, every little scuff brought back memories of road trips, rallies, poker runs, etc.

I feel the same way about my guitar... may it show how much it was truly loved.

Me to. I want it to look brand new for a long time then when i get sick of polishing it I'll gig it out.

I want my basses to age gracefully. I wipe them down and take care of them, but I don't get angry or mad when I ding or scratch them. I have seen some heavily gigged/reliced guitars and basses that look like someone dragged them across the Howard Franklin and back a few times. It's all part of the fun and games.

One of the reasons I bought a maple necked strat was to see the aging process first hand. I love the look of a worn guitar, its a badge of honour so to speak, and shows your dedication to playing more than any words can describe.

Clean and well-cared-for. Honestly used but not ab-used.

It's a zen-tool-care-honour-one's life-gift-instrument-pal thing.

Shiny and new is nice, but a guitar that has been well taken care of and shows the normal battle scars from years of playing is what I prefer.

I'm one of those tidy nuts. I always wipe down my guitars after I play them, and, from time to time, put a little polish on them. Just one of those types that always takes care of my things.

I've never understood getting a "relic". If there is going to be battle damage to a guitar, at want it to be MY battle damage. Then at least there is a memory of that knick or scar.

I like all looks. I have a couple strats that I baby and I will try really hard to make sure that I dont scratch or ding them. I have one that has some dings and scratches like above the pick guard from playing and i have another strat that I am completely beating up and giving my own heavy relic job on it. I like all the looks so i figure why not have at least one of each.

Here are some pictures of the relic job I did on my strat. It may not be everyones cup of tea but I am really happy with the way it came out.
