Identifying Fender Guitars

I can;t understand why in the day of the computer and everything Fender has accomplished with computers they do not have a simple database someplace that would let their customers enter a serial number and get the official breakdown on their guitar in terms of specific model, year and perhaps the original equipment (pickups etc) that it came with.
I just bought a MIM Strat and so far all I can find out from the serial number is that it was made in Mexico (it says that on the guitar) and that it was made in 2011 or 2012.
Consider this grovelling if that will help!

Email your serial number to customer relations. It may take a few days, but they'll get back to you.
