I have a desktop PC that I want to use for recording software. Currently it has (2) 184 pin 512MB SD DDR 266mhz DIMM chips for RAM memory.

I want increase its RAM capacity. Can I replace the 512 MB 266mhz chips with (2) 1GB 300mhz chips. I know the board will handle the 2GB of RAM but will the increased MHZ be a problem?

Hi There

You need to get the spec of your motherboard (search the web with the make and model if you do not have the manual) it will then tell you what speed and size of RAM it will take, 266mhz could be its limit but the spec will tell you if it will accept RAM with a 300mhz speed.

hope this helps

is it a Dell? if so, you can save yourself a lot of time searching motherboards specs, and just go to the dell site, enter the service tag for the computer, and use the 'memory selector' tool. I believe HP has something similar too....

It a no-name build. I think is a FOXCON board

I have been out of the computer game for a while, but your bus speed is going to be the big limiting factor. if the memory is compatible with the socket it will still only preform as fast as the memory buss will allow.
what processor type and sped are you running in it? for recording you want something fast (bus and processor) so you can use high sampling rates, especially if you are mixing multiple tracks. you can have massive amounts memory, but if your processor cannot run through the data it is useless.

When you open the system case, it should hopefully be somewhere on the motherboard itself.

Do you remember what year you purchased this PC? It might be time to just move on if it's getting old.

Computer performance is based on a combination of several components. The main ones being memory, processor, hard disk speed and system bus speed (motherboard).

If you have one weak link in the chain, an upgrade may be in order. If you have several weak links in your chain, it might be time to go out and get a new chain.

The "new chain" theory looks a little better because of Windows 8. There is a push to unload the current crop of Windows 7 machines and deals are out there.

Good luck,

Agreed. You also might want to optimize your computer for audio.
