Not sure what you asking, but for me searching for the ultimate tone changes from day to day.

A "Leo-spec" Strat, a Fulltone OCD, and a vintage Fender tube amp with a speaker older than most of the members of this forum pretty much does it for me.

My guitar instructor says that once you find the perfect tone, you die.

I think I understand that Bill. It's like the road is endless, stop at the next gas station.

For me it is easy:

1973 Guild Starfire IV or Guild M75 Bluesbird into a Monsterpiece Stud into a Carr Rambler= BLUES

I haven't found it yet, but I've gotten closer in the last few years.....

The first step was selling off the last non Fender guitar I had, and going back to an American Standard Strat.....

The second step was selling off a bunch of cheap, crappy sounding overdrive pedals, and getting a Fulltone RTO.....

My next step...(hopefully immediately following this coming Christmas)....will be to trade in my aging Blues Jr. for a '65 DeLux Reverb.....

Even then the quest will not end....unless of course I die.....

Finding that tone is not as difficult as it's made out to be.

For me it has come down to a very simplified rig....
A Mid 60's Magnatone 410 Classic and any of my Strats, which all have different pickups and wiring setups.
No pedals, no peripherals, just direct drive
The trick is to have an amp that will overdrive naturally at the loudness/volume required for the venue.
Once you have your practice amp and your gigging amp dialed in then it's time spent getting to know each other and where the sweet spots are. The latter will take some time, but cannot be achieved unless you drive your amp to natural overdrive and then be able to use the resulting natural effects, get to know how to harness the myriad of sounds which your fingers can create.

Very well put. It's not so much about the gear. It's more about the journey and what we learn on our quest.

Ditto. Every so often I go through a back-to-basics or less-is-more phase where I put away all my pedals, plug directly into the amp and try to find the "sweet spots".

Cheers!

I guess tone is in 4 places,
The hands,
The instrument,
The processing,
The Amp.
Here is the tone I am completely obsessed with!
Greg Hilden. Enjoy! :D

The second you get the tone, the fuel thats feeding your desire to persue more vanishes.
Thats why I try to make my gear sound as horrible as possible.

The right guitar paired with the right amp.....for the situation. Seeing as THAT tone is subjective depending on the individual, that tone for a metal head being at the opposite end of the spectrum from a country player or a blues player, niether is right or wrong. Knowing what your trying to achieve is half the battle getting there is the fun part!

Agreed . This guy has some outstanding guitars , and is a good player (I subscribe to his vids)
But I think his tone is always very similar , whether - it is a tele , strat or 335!! So I suggest you just buy that Okko Diablo , then you are close
By all means , I love the sound......

a few years ago i stumbled into a local guitar shop, except for instead of guitar shop it was more of a gear hoarders warehouse that he occassionally sold things out of. there were maybe 20 guitars , a whole mess of parts, and somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 billion amps of all different shapes and sizes. i was squeezing through the tiny pathways, hoping to find some cheap old beater of an amp to replace what i was playing back then (a line 6 spider 3, i'm sad to say) - and then i saw it - the dream come true. a 1960s twin reverb, in almost perfect condition. i grabbed a guitar and plugged in, and friends- it was magical. i totally get what some of you are saying about just a guitar and the right amp is all you need... sadly this guy knew what he had and wouldn't budge on his crazy prices, so I left feeling empty and sad. since that day, i've always thought that the day i can afford an original twin reverb will be the day i'll have "that tone"
