Talking 'bout the sun - right after my previous posting in this thread , a friend called me. Did I want a visitor ? OK - he came - bringing along his relatively new Fender Tim Armstrong Hellcat . We tried to form a band a couple of years back , which fell apart . Now we've been jamming , singing & talking for 7-8 hours , and agreed on continue a collaboration - purpose : to make music as a duo , with an open door to expanding to a band again - depending of development direction. Guess it is going to be ''country-ish'' , Steve Earle-ish . Today was all about acoustics , dobro, lap steel & tele :D Great fun !

+10K I have had a couple breaks in my gigging just due to the career I chose, but I must admit, each time I got back into it, it was a blast. Good on ya Phreddybee! Stay with it as long as you continue to enjoy it!

Played out last night and it went well. We were tight and rippin' it, the crowd was into the music, that made our job more fun. Got home feeling great, woke up with a headache and a stomach bug :( , welcome back to the real world I guess.

a little background first

i have been playing since 1960, and was in a few bands from 66-77 or so. at that point i got tired of working two jobs, and gigging on weekends left me no time to pursue the fairer sex :( i still played on occasion, but nothing serious.

on monday night a friend called and said they needed a second guitarist for thursday night. i agreed to play, and he sent me a list of about 80 songs they do. ouch! mostly classic rock, 70's, 60's, a little blues, stuff i was familiar with, so it wasn't too bad. i was a little woried about stamina, as i have had a few issues with my left hand.

so i get there and set up. we launch into our first set, and it all came back to me. i can't remember the last time it felt this good. the crowd was having fun, some of my family was there, and it brought back a lot of memories. no pain in my left hand either thru the 3 hours we played. the fact it was a paying gig with free food too didn't hurt.

when i came home, my wife looked at me and could see the excitement in my face. the guys in the band want me to play more often. what last night did for me can't be described. i am on top of the world this morning.

anybody else here take time off from playing and get back in to it?

Great post, man. There's nothing like the feeling of good live music participation. I haven't played out since 2005, unless I count the country gig I couldn't stay awake for a few years ago.

I've been trying to get back on board for about a year now. I don't have any pain, but both hands still have different engines at this point. There's also still a difference in skill when standing..as opposed to sitting. I can only get these things back naturally.

I've recently been inspired by shorter scale length basses. I'm thinking the best tones come from 32' to the length of a Rick 4001(slightly shorter than a Fender). Never gave it much thought before, though.

Hope it all works good for you, dude.

Congrats on getting back gigging Phreddy. The gigging bug is something that never goes away. Most people who have gigged at one time or another always get the urge to get back to it eventually-even after 30 years.I haven't gigged professionally since 1991-92 and for the past few years the need to get out gigging again is overwhelming. The only thing that's holding me back now is the neuro-muscular condition in my hands and forearms but once that's cured-fingers crossed-I'm going to be chomping at the bit to hit the clubs again and once again be set upon by hordes of adoring fans...lol.

Anyway, once again congrats and I hope that you keep it up and have the time of your life.

great question- in 1966 i was 12 years old. couldn't play in bars, so we played a lot of weddings, as well as parties where no alcohol was served. in 1972, that band broke up when we graduated from high school, and went in different directions. i palyed in a few wedding bands after that till '77 or so. almost no bar gigs-almost

one night around 78 i was with some friends at a local pub. we started drinking around 7 pm. at 9 the band wanted to start, but had no guitarist. my wonderful friend volunteered me. on the first break, the drinks started heading my way, and the guitar player finally showed up. a young lady came up and talked to me for a while, until her boyfriend came up and threatened me. that was the closest i came to a groupie. sorry i have no big tales of debauchery to share

Outstanding! My background is similar to yours where I haven't gigged since New Year's Eve 1985, going into 1986 so I can appreciate your experience. Hopefully, if a similar situation ever comes along for me, I can look forward to it with all positive excitement. :D

thanks again for the responses.

it was cool when we finished, because a lot of people came up and talked to us, saying how good we sounded. the guys in the band paid me some nice compliments, and said when they need another guitar player that they would call me.

this was the tonic i needed. i just started a new job that i like, after leaving a 40 year job under difficult circumstances. both the new job and the gig made me feel a lot better about myself. as a matter of fact, the day after the gig i was offered a promotion at work.

i am a lucky man

Great thread Phreddy!!! I totally can relate I'm just back to playing out after not doing so since the late 80's when I was a kid.... It's great fun huh, nerves get you for the first track or so but then you forget there's a audience and it all comes together huh!!! Have a ball!!!
