Hi, my name is Paul, and I am an alcoh,,,,,,, oops,,,, sorry,,, I am a beginner guitarist. I had major spine surgery almost two years ago, and about a year ago I decided to learn guitar to pass the time of recovery. I now have two guitars, a Epiphone and a Fender Strat. And I still can't play a song on either of them  . I have been cruising the forums, and I read about upgrading the pickups like it is almost mandatory and a notch in the belt if you do. My Strat is a MIM, and I think it sounds good to me, but what do I know. I think I should learn to play before swapping out pups. Anyway, just wanted to get started here, and say hi from S/E Michigan.

Welcome Aboard!

If your guitars sound good to you as they are, then just leave them that way. Then play them a lot!!!!

Swapping out pups isn't really madatory. A lot of times pups are swapped out without even knowing how they will sound. Someone just heard so and so uses them or something like that.

At your level of playing I'd just stick to learning to your instrument. One day when you can really hear the difference you can change out your pups.

Well, I went cheap, and bought a Dot Studio Arch Top. I was sold a Roland Cube by the lady at the store. And I had such a time with my left hand on the Epi, that I thought I'd try a different guitar. I went to another music store and tried the Standard and it seemed a bit shorter, and felt nice. I thought I'd sell the Epiphone now. I sold the Roland cube and bought a Fender Super Champ XD, and now that Dot Studio sounds like a million bucks, so now I have two nice sounding guitars. :D

I've got guitars worth thousands and I've got cheapies too. I have a Dot Studio and love it. $200 bucks and the neck feels great. I put in a couple of P90 single coils and it's just a rock tone monster. No one would know it's a $200 axe if they heard it on a recording.

Hey bannanafingers welcome. Let me say this, I have a 96 am standard tele, it has been my main guitar since 97 when i bought it. I havent modified the electronics at all, the pu's are stock, and i really have no intentions to changes them, i have talked about it but really i dont want to. There are other mods i would do first before pu's

And that little champ sounds awesome!!

Welcome BananaFingers!

I'm a fellow newbie... and speaking from the advice that I've received here and the (limited) experience that I've had so far... save your money on the pickups and spend it on learning first (books and lessons). At first I thought my MIA Strat sounded bad because it needed all kinds of expensive stuff... turns out all it needed was to be properly set up ($25 at my local guitar tech) and I just needed to practice more. A LOT more.

Cheers! And best of luck!!!
Ziggy...

A gret upgrade for an epiphone Is some Les Paul humbuckers.
And for fender Some seymour duncans might do the trick. 8)
