I switched from a Dunlop .60 to a Dunlop .48 on a whim. (was just in the music store one day) I've been playing better than ever, more clearly, more control, less energy wasted when muting, just one of the best decisions I've made in terms of my playing.

I too have been using softer picks the past couple years although quite not as soft as you. I'm using Dunlop Tortex .60 for electric work and Tortex .50 for acoustic. I didn't believe it a few years back when a guy told me he had better control with a thinner pick but he was 100% right. I used to use picks almost a whole mm thick. The stiffer, the better. I even had one that was solid steel. No give at all. I am more acurate and have better feel and more expressiveness with the lighter ones.

The speed I play at really can't be done with a thick pick. I've never been able to do it without the pick flying out of my fingers. Basically, I mess up a lot less because i don't catch a string or w/e. But yea, for the slower stuff, I may use a Tortex .50 or a Dunlop .60. I don't like the Tortex ones as much because of how quickly they wear. I love the color of the .50, though.

Try out the Dunlop 1.0mm "Subby" They are translucent red. Like a Vicks cough drop. My favorite!

Those would probably break my strings

How do you play with something that thick?

I too use a much thinner pick nowadays, a .60 orange Dunlop tortex.

I can't stand the feel of thicker picks now, or the sound of them. They sound too thick and lacking in definition for my taste.

I don't know about the sound, but the feel is very tense for me.

...I've been using thick picks for a while now. After reading through this thread, I pulled out a Clayton Star Pick .60 mm along with a bunch of progressively thicker picks. I concur. Thick picks lack definition. And, I noticed pinch harmonics are easier with thin picks too.

The last time I used a thin Clayton Star Pick, I was stuck with a hard grip from the thick picks and the Clayton Star picks would fall apart in my fingers during speed picking, literally. So, I'm backing off on the grip a bit to see where this experiment goes -- I ordered some more thin picks today!

Interesting how everyone is digging the thin picks. I would have thought it would be the other way around.

I switched from .78(?)mm Dunlop Nylons to 1.18mm Dunlop Jazz II's around a year ago and can't stand anything else anymore. Logic being that since there is zero give you can dictate how much you "dig in" with your picking attack.

Alas, everyone plays differently.

I've been using the red Dunlop Jazz II's. They aren't marked with a thickness, but I don't think they are 1.18mm. Do they come in different thicknesses? I have a black Tortex the size of a Jazz II, that's much thicker and I don't like it as much.

Yep, the red ones are the ones I use, aswell. From I to III it goes 1.10, 1.18, 1.38.

I like how small they are between the fingers. Not so much excess nylon hanging out.
