Just checked the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame inductees roster and....SURPRISE! No Wart Breath yet. So we'll get Brian to save him a spot! Brian's such a nice guy that he probably would!

My earlier post on this thread admonished the OP for diss'ng another Musician.

The Fact that he is a Famous and arguably iconic Musician perhaps makes the sin all the more grievous.

But, I have to tell you that growing up, the Beach Boys weren't really my thing.

I was born in Philly, but moved at age 2 to Europe where my Father rep'd a major US Company where he was based out of Geneva. I was born in 1954 - the year of the Stratocaster and Bill Haley's 'Rock Around the Clock' - deemed to be the Year of Rock & Roll (debatable).

Anyway, we returned to the States in the Summer of '64. The Beach sound was all the rage... but I had been listening to early Beatles - ('I wanna Hold Your Hand' was released in the States that summer, but the Beatles already had 2 Euro albums out) as well as Muddy, T-Bone Walker, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Howlin' Wolf, Bobby Bland and all sort of Black artists that were virtually unknown to most Americans at that time because 'Race Music' couldn't get any Air Play.

I made friends back here and they all were caught up in the California Craze. I brought out the LPs I had accumulated overseas, and they were mostly blown away.

There were several friends who's mothers' later told them that they were not allowed to play with me anymore because of the 'Race Records' I listened to. My point is, the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, The Castaways, etc. weren't really my thing, though I noted their impact and respected their work.

Fast forward to the early '80s and I found myself on the staff of ChicagoFest, a lakeside music festival held at Navy Pier. In 1982, one of the headliners was the Beach Boys who were launching their 20th Anniversary Tour. I was invited to have dinner with them backstage before their show (along with maybe 30 others) and stood in the wings while they played their set... I was transformed ! I met each of them and actually sat next to Brian at dinner who was a really normal, though intense, guy - we had a great conversation.

Ironically, just this past April, my wife and I were in New Orleans to attend JazzFest. We had special VIP tix and access, and the Beach Boys Headlined the Friday Show as the start of their 50th Anniversary Tour (Sat. - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Sun. - Bruce Springstein & the 'E' Street Band). Again, I was backstage and in the wings. I met everyone after the show at a reception and Brian actually remembered that night back in '82 when we shared a Fried Chicken dinner backstage on Navy Pier !

I have several of their albums and acknowledge that they are a true piece of Americana, but still must admit that they're not in my top 20.

Still, you gotta respect the work !!

As I said, to diss them is truly Bad Form.. !!

cheers!

Great story , Lightnin MN ! I share your view - but never shared some chicken with Brian W

About the OP - seems like he always is trying to make a riot out of things. I don't think I ever will answer to his (it's?) postings again - it's too stupid :?

Hugely successful poll Breathman. 4 votes should give you some accurate figures to process.
I don't know if this is "relevant" ,but it seems that 95% of the posters on this thread think you're a d...head.

I'm not a huge BB fan myself, but what's the point of this???

Well, I'm new here... and still learning...

But, I'm with you... if I see another thread initiated by the OP, I'll just ignore it !

I don't really have time for Negativity...

I'm here to learn and share about the Guitar - Fenders in particular .. !!

cheers!

The Beach Boys are the biggest hippie band of all time. This thread was pretty funny.

They were relevent to me when I was 17. I now wish Pet Sounds could've been recorded with today's clarity in recording.

Aaaaaaaaand, he's gone...again...

He must have felt his IT director's breath on his neck again, and was afraid his "billable hours" weren't equalling his "Forum hours."

Gossamer/Skirt So Plain/Earnest/Dirty Words & Bad Breath--all the same guy with the same weird ideas about what is entertaining and interesting and a penchant for polls.

Good riddance to bad rubbish.

to comment on the original question (despite its stupidity,) it probably has been a while, a long while, since Brian Wilson was relevant/influential, but the question itself is irrelevant, because he did make great music, and help shape an era. That era helped shape everything after it, so he had a hand in that.

more importantly, great music is great music, and stays great music, no matter how old it is, when or where it was made. He certainly made enough of that. Who cares about relevance?
