Maybe "On An Island" should be on the list?

The 90's had Smells like Teen Spirit, You oughta know, Black Hole Sun, and Jeremy.

The 80's had Thriller, Sweet Dreams, Sledgehammer, and My Sharona.

Now that we're 8 years into the decade of the 2000's what would say are the songs that will be identified with this decade.

Yeah, I have to give the Strokes props for being a straight forward, 60's style guitar band. Just the rock.

Having a band name to go with most of these songs would be helpful. I only know about what songs get played to death (which spoils it for me anyway), and I don't make it a habit to surf the web for songs I don't know about. I like good, consistent bands that I think I'll hear about again, not just individual songs.

Then again, this topic is about songs, not bands. I just hope the world hasn't gone from 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' to 'Hey There Delilah' and think that that's as good as it's gonna get.

The 21st century is like a rock and roll desert for new bands. James Blount and Mayer are legitimate talents. The old soldiers are still with us at least.

This post has thoroughly depressed me in that Rock/Blues/Punk is dying

You might be right. I think 'modern' Country music is where some of it went to hide (well, Pop at least). And I'm not a huge fan of that, either.
