I have been looking around at alternatives for an acoustic guitar lately and ran across a Martin kit to build your own C41 or something to that effect. I was wondering if anyone here has ever tried such a thing.

I realize it won't really be a Martin (except that my name is Martin I suppose  ) but I have a model building background and a fair amount of experience in fine woodworking, so it sounds like an interesting project. Just wondering if anyone has any idea how difficult this is and if there is any chance of getting a decent guitar out of it.

Martin

If you feel that you're a good woodworker, go for it. If you do it right, it'll be a Martin guitar. Of course, if you mess it up, it'll be half of a Martin guitar.

I know I wouldn't try it. I'm willing to pay the money to have someone at Martin build my guitars for me.

Hey, if you can build a guitar that sounds as good as a martin, then I think you should quit your day job and build guitars for a living.

But you'll never know unless you try.

I think I might give it a shot... I won't have time to get it started for a couple months though. I do need to do some more research though. The kit is $630.00 but doesn't say much about how much time it will take or what tools I will need. If I have to spend several hundred more on tools, it gets rather steep. Also, if it takes hundreds of hours, the time is probably better spent practicing my guitar. I'd really like to know how it compares in difficulty to a wooden model ship or other comparison that I can relate to.

Also I don't think I will bother to tell my wife I am spending that kind of money on something that will likely end up in the garbage.

I'd maybe buy the dreadnought kit for $400 if you're not sure about your results.

For the sake of not wasting $200.

Go for it. I am a carpenter by trade and am currently collecting bits to build my own electric guitar. I work opposite a joinery shop and have secured a piece of maple for the body, free of charge, although I may try and get a piece of alder or mahogany.
