like most people that don't usually have a lump of cash to throw around, i've had a short bucket list of guitars for several years.... the insurance check i'll be getting on thursday is going to buy one of those guitars.... but i have to pick just one. too many other things that are more important to take care of, can't just go blow several thousand on gear like i want to.
so this is my list - and the average price i'm looking at. . .opinions?
1- kurt cobain mustang (blue with the competition stripe) - i have been saying for years that if for some reason i ever had millions of dollars i'd hunt the his actual mustang down and buy it if possible. now i can settle for a repro and be happy :) 999, but i saw one for 699 the other day and was told that price will probably fluctuate a bit because sam ash is trying to speed up sales on them. i'd have to talk someone down to around 700 or wait for the price to drop again.
2- Harmony Rebel H82G (Avacado greenburst semi-hollow weird retro guitar i've been looking at online for years. they're usually around 350 when you find them for sale. again , a waiting game. can't find any at the moment)
3- Ibanez Jet king - either the 3 or 4, with the triangle markers on the fretboard, and i'd go either red or blue. and add an aftermarket comp. stripe like i've seen some people do online. looks sweet. played one a few years ago in a store and it sounded a little hollow, but i really like the looks of it. would definitely change pups to give it a meatier sound. they also go for around 3-400 online.
4- the J Mascis Fender Jazzmaster - the purple one from a few years back, not the squier they're selling now. when i bought my jaguar a few years ago it was a hard decision between it and the j mascis... i went with the jaguar but in the back of my mind somewhat regretted it. seeing them online for 6-700
5. -or just get a cheap strat and butcher it. i don't know why, but i can't keep a strat stock to save my life. i looked at a blacktop the other day i like the feel of, and it'll only cost me around 400 dollars.
so, what do you guys think is the best way to go here?

I say the Mustang or the Jazzmaster.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

i think the mustang is what i'd rather have, it's just more money than i want to spend. but, i can afford it for once, so i might have to go for it. :)
oh, and i made this - enjoy my self portrait.

note the two in the middle are a little distorted because i'm terrible with MS paint.

 If you don't get the Kurt Cobain Mustang you will regret it just as you now regret not getting the J. Mascis Jazzmaster. Dan, don't make the same mistake twice.

I will say that the question here is really which one to buy NOW. I fully intend on having a room in my house filled with all of these guitars and more at some point. lol.
update- went back into sam ash today and they never changed the price on the mustang like they said they had to since i brought it to their attention....i asked my salesman why it was so cheap already and he looked in the computer only to find it wasn't technically on clearance. they told me they'd have to put it back out with the normal price... but i guess they forgot. it's still in the same spot with a 699.99 tag on it. i'm totally buying it thursday if it's still there. everyone keep your fingers crossed.
the rebel is a close second, though. i've been drooling over that thing for years. but there's none out there right now that i can find for sale, so...mustang this week!

When I was about 15 I really would've loved to get my hands on a 2 or 3 pup Avocado burst Harmony Rocket and if I had the money and saw one today I'd be on it like a vulture on roadkill. That would be a no-brainer for me-definitely Harmony Rocket.

guitslinger, that pic is of a rebel, but i did see a reissue harmony rocket at sam ash tonight. very cool looking. red/black finish. i heard harmony reissued the rebel as well a couple of years back, but they didn't reissue the green finish. only the sunburst. fools.
harmony hasn't been harmony since they sold to korea or wherever, though. :(
